it really depends... if i am not sure to get something sweet ill stay at the bargain racks all day paying a couple bucks each.... If i was assuered a sweet pull id pay whatever i thought was a fair price based on secondary market sales. I would not for instance pay what a box or pack of 09-10 Exquisite goes for as many of the cards once they hit the secondary market are worth basically nothing. However on some of the higher end sets with limits and feature good players only I would spend quite a bit more knowing i was at least going to get something of a star instead of Luc Mbou a Moute or however you spell his name.

Depends. I don't buy a single pack of any high end cards just because of the whole "case hit" paradigm that's taken over the hobby over the last decade. I made the decision to avoid breaks all together unless I buy an entire case. I can't be 100% sure that the box came from an unsearched case so I avoid them all together.

I don't buy any pack. I think $5 per pack is just too much. $5 can get Duncan, Dirk, a lot of superstar GU already. Buying a pack and only hope for Lebron and Kobe is just insane.

I agree with some of the others and say it depends...I don't have much 'disposable income' right now, so $20 is the max I'll pay provided there's a good guarantee in it, and even then I buy only about 1-2 packs a year of that price.

Agree with everyone else, a looong while back I had enough to buy a box nothing to high-end but for the same price I would have spent on a box I got this

IMO, I made the right choice

Box of exquisite = give or take 600 bucks
For the same price I can get:

and

and

and

Yes, this is an extreme case of course since i took the most expensive box there is out there and compared it to my PC items but you can basically relate this to pretty much any dollar value and whatever singles you like to have in your collection.

Because of the exact reason stated above, I do not buy packs either. Although, as a card collector, I do find opening packs fun, so I try to find late 90's / early 00's boxes that have about 24-36 packs for about 15$ dlvd when I can. SO each pack of those is less than 0.99 cents. That's the only time I'll spend money on packs.

The way I see it, I'm paying for the experience as well as the cards. I like opening boxes/packs with my brother, so its a fun experience. Getting good secondary value in the cards we pull is really just a bonus - at least we get tradebait, with the occasional PC hit. Anyone who buys boxes/packs expecting to get the full value back every time is just delusional.
That said, right now I will not spend more than about $100 on a box - I don't buy single packs. Of course that amount could change should I run into some significant disposable income.

I've spent too much on boxes over the years, and with prices as ridiculous as they have been I haven't picked up but a few so far this year. What I really hate is the younger collectors who don't have the income to spend. It takes away so much of their selection if they want a box or packs. Money/Greed has ruined the hobby for me.
