One of two things happens on draft day with this kid. Either he is an absolute steal, or he is an absolute bust. I see no middle ground at all with Kabanov.

Honestly, if he goes outside the top 10, he's a TOTAL steal. Talent wise, I think he's better than Seguin but a bit behind Hall. He has crazy skills and really if he falls to 19 and the kings draft him, I will get a customized jersey of him.

I'm going to be that he'll fall lower than that. I don't see the 2nd round (like central scouting put him in) but he'll be a mid-20s pick. Kinda like Robbie Schremp (but for different reasons).

This kid is full of attitude problems, quit his team in the middle of the QMJHL playoff. The fact that he's Russian - and the KHL could lure him back to their side of the Atlantic - will scare some teams too.

Andy's assesment of the talent is pretty bang on. From everything I've seen & read... he should be the #2 pick. Too many things working against him, aside from hockey skills though.

That being said..... is he's still available at #31 (which I doubt) I'd love to see Edmonton burn their 2nd round pick on him.

He's just a kid, but to quit the Moncton team to go back to Russia only to find he had been cut anyway was wrong of Kabanov, and has admitted it was the biggest mistake of his life. He'll learn, or he'll go the same way as Radulov.

He's also been quoted in saying "I'll give you my passport" if he manages to get into and stay in North America and "I don't want to play on national teams... actually, I wanted to change my citizenship". He doesn't want to go back to Russia, ever, by the sounds of things. Desperate sayings to be lured into the NHL or maybe he literally has made a huge mess of things and wants a second chance? Who knows.

IF a team will take the gamble and draft him, and he turns out to be the star projected... wow! Call this contradictory, but I would be hesitant in drafting him if I were Holmgren and the Flyers.

Sean HUGE problem here. KHL factor? Read any article that he talks about Russia in and he said he would NEVER go back to russia and he is considering giving up his Russian citizenship just to prove that point. Look, the fact is that yes he has a few problems but the kid is a superstar talent wise and if the Kings pass him, I might go crazy.

It's good that he says that now, but if a KHL team comes calling with 4 million tax free for each of the next 3 seasons.... he's a fool if he doesn't consider it. I'm not saying it will happen, I'm just saying it's a possibility. You know it will scare a few teams, and knock his draft position down a few more slots. There was nothing Cherepanov said to suggest he didn't want to come to the NHL.... but the 'threat' of a Russian team wanting to pay him big bucks worked against his draft slot.

I agree - he's got superstar talent. I would be willing to wager there will be a few teams that will be kicking themselves in 3 or 4 years, for passing on him.

But his problems - they're the reason why he's ranked 31, and not in the top 5 (where is talent SHOULD put him). Teams are aware of this, and will be cautious.

It might drive you crazy if LA passes on him, but don't be shocked if it happens.

He's the wild card of the draft. He could go anywhere from 6 to 36, IMO. Nothing will surprise me in that range.
