race to the bottom? Seriously? You must not have looked up Edmonton's all time drafting record.

First off, I will submit that the Oilers 1979 draft may be the best one in history. They took Kevin Lowe, Mark Messier, and Glenn Anderson with their first three picks. Coffey, Kurri and Moog were all drafted the following season. Grant Fuhr and Steve Smith in 1981..... and then the Wheels fall off:

    1982: Jim Playfair
1983: Jeff Beukeboom (who's actually pretty respectable, considering this list)
    1984: Selmar Odelein
    1985: Scott Metcalfe
    1986: Kim Issel
    1987: Peter Soberlak
    1988: Francois Leroux
    1989: Jason Soules
    1990: Scott Allison
1991: Tyler Wright / Martin Rucinsky
    1992: Joe Hulbig
1993: Jason Arnott / Nick Stajduhar
1994: Jason Bonsignore / Ryan Smyth
    1995: Steve Kelly
1996: Boyd Devereaux / Matthieu Descoteaux
    1997: Michel Riesen
    1998: Michael Henrich
    1999: Jani Rita
    2000: Alexei Mikhnov
    2001: Ales Hemsky
    2002: Jesse Niinimaki
    2003: Marc Pouliot
2004: Devan Dubnyk / Robbie Schremp
    2005: Andrew Cogliano
2007: Sam Gagner / Alex Plante / Riley Nash

(2006 was left out, before we had no 1st round pick. Not including 2008 or 2009 yet.... Eberle & MPS, because they haven't played a game).

I'm sorry, but from the years 1982, through to 1991, the best NHLer Edmonton selected was Jeff Beukeboom. Maybe Rucinsky (who did nothing for them, they traded him before he was even a 'semi-star').

In 1993 & 1994 they drafted very good players, but had two first round picks each time.... and the other was a bust (4th overall for Bonsignore! Their highest pick to date, until this year).

From 1996 through 2000, Deveraux was the best 1st rounder. Not exactly a star.

2001, with Hemsky, they made a solid pick..... before going back to nothing but garbage for 3 more years (Niinimaki is the only player from the 2002 first round to never play an NHL game).

2005 was good. Cogs is a decent player, but he's nothing special. 2007 is good too. Gagner with the 6th pick looks to be okay (I'll admit I wanted Voracek at the time).

I've liked the picks the last couple of years too..... but for the most part, Edmonton's drafting has been historically among the worst.

2003 1st round to the Sharks (Mark Stuart) with Brad Boyes Alyn McCauley for Owen Nolan

2004 1st round when to the Rangers (Kris Chucko) along with a 2nd rounder (Mike Sauer) Jarkko Immonen, and Maxim Kondratiev..... for Brian Leetch and a 4th rounder (Roman Kukumberg)

2007 1st went to the Sharks (Lars Eller) plus a 2nd, and a 4th.... for Toskala and Mark Bell.

The most recent two, we know were for Phil Kessel.

Don't worry..... if any of those swaps look bad, remember this..... it's not as bad a dealing away a 1st round pick to New Jersey for Tom Kurvers (they took Scott Neidermayer) or when they got Wendel Clark back, along with Matt Schneider & DJ Smith for Kenny Jonsson Darby Hendrickson, Sean Haggerty & a 1st round.... which was 4th over all and turned into Bobby Lou :)

Hey, who did we get in return for those No Pick 1st rounders? And for the team that got the 1st rnd pick, who did they draft?

UGH i had forgotten about those two. We arent the worst at drafting just the worst at acquiring over the hill players for picks that turn out pretty solid.

Man Rask and Eller would look sweet in T.O. right about now. Especially Eller.

Also, Habs have released Jason Missiaen, the hulking 6'8" goalie that was drafted in 2008. I think I may have an auto of his. LOL

Watch for Missiaen to develop. Kid is quiet and plays on a poor team but for the size of the guy, he moves and reacts very well.

I could see Burke trying to sign Missiaen...based on his size alone.
