My cousin has TomTom and I know a guy that has a Garmin. Both seem about equal. One thing I have noticed for both of them, if the name of the street you are looking for is not found in the database it will give you the closest match which can send you miles out of your way.

I'm a Garmin owner... I owned a C330 street pilot for 4 years and the only time my GPS screwed me up is when they closed a freeway on ramp and moved it down further 3 miles, the GPS doesn't see this, but gave an alternate route which was cool.. I didn't even update the maps, so that being the reason... You should keep updated though, cause of new roads and crap like that....
Then, last Thanksgiving (2009) picked up a Nuvi 255T with lifetime traffic updates for like $109 and no problems yet... My friend owned a Tom Tom and has had problems..
It could be operator error though,...Good luck with your choices.. I personally highly recommend a Garmin though...

Oh wow, my dad just got me a Magellan 1440 RoadMate a few weeks ago. It's great. They are also very cheap - $100 or less. You might want to consider them in the mix.

I do believe there is a staff member who deals in this. I am pretty sure it was a Brad, but forget his screen name

My girlfriend has a Garmin and it works great. Was on a road trip and my check engine light came on. Did a search for the closest Autozone and it took me there.
Also my parents have a Magellan which I have used and saw no problems with. The only problem I have heard from it is my parents said they were driving on the Ohio turnpike and it told them to get off the turnpike and then directed them right back onto the turnpike.
For the price I think Magellan works fine. If you want the more high end I would go with Garmin because it is definitely worth the price tag.
