    construction guru help needed

okay, heres the deal. I am trying to lower a high ceiling in a kitchen but need it made of drywall. so it looks like the rest of the house. The ceiling now is concrete. Not interested in a suspended dropped ceiling with panels and ceiling tiles but a plain drywall ceiling with just a couple holes for the lights. I need to lower it about 4 inches , maybe 6. How can i lower it considering its now concrete?

I'm not a professional by any means but I've done my fair share of renovations ... I would imagine that lowering a concrete ceiling is not going to be easy if it can be done at all.

I'd have to think that if your ceiling is made of concrete that somwhere down the line it supports some other walls as well which needs to be considered before dropping it down ... how will that effect support for the surrounding area.

Your best and easiest bet would probably be a false ceiling attached to your concrete ceiling already established .. I know you said you didn't want it that way but it may be the only way of doing it.

Obviously your best bet would be to get a professional contractor out there to give you options but IMO ... it's going to be a tough and expensive job dropping a concrete ceiling.

Good luck, and keep me informed.

I'm not a professional either, but seems to me that if you want a drywall ceiling you'd be able to run rafters at whatever height you want off of your wall studs and hang drywall to the rafters. If you don't have anyone you know that could stop by and take a look you can usually get contractors out to give you estimates and tell you what they'd do.
