I thought this was too funny:

The article was posted Jun 30, 4:51 pm EDT. The article itself is pretty meh, with the exception of this one, insightful quote:
Another problem: Beyond ex-Flame Matthew Lombardi, there’s not a lot out of there in the way of UFA centers. It’s not like Calgary is going to bring back Olli Jokinen.

Corvo is terrible defensively...and Sabres already have Myers to play big Powerplay minutes....Trust me , you guys don't need his services at all.
Darcy Regier will probably try to sign a second line forward like Matt Cullen or someone under 3.5 millions to add offensive depth to your team

A day that saw Philly pick up Shelly and NY get Boogard and this is the one you point out as the "stupidest".
Why? Straight up - the money?

That's a debatable one. There were quite a few headscratchers...
Jokinen to Calgary - just that it happened
Boogaard getting 4 years, $1.6M per - did nobody learn from Laraque?
Volchenkov getting 6 years, $4.25M per - for a shot-blocker?
Gonchar getting 3 years, $5.5M per plus a NMC - risky for a 35+ D-man with injury troubles the last couple years. If it pans out, though, it's genius.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

it may be " stupid" to him but to the pens fans it was awsome and he is who I and most people wanted if gonchar left well gonchar left therefor making this deal not "stupid" and it can't be the money because almost every team overpaid for someone this free agency

Richard , i do agree with most of the names you mentionned but Volchenkov is more than a shot blocker. He will be in top 5 for hits again this year.
That being said , if Volchenkov is a bad move at 4.25 M , can you tell me how Hamhuis , Martin , Michalek are not ?
Paul Martin is one of the most over-rated D in the league.....ask any Devils fans on this site and they will probably tell you that Martin at 5 Millions / year would never be in a red jersey

It's a bad move in exactly the same way that Mike Komisarek at $5M was a bad move. They're pretty much the same player - they block shots and they hit - and I was aghast last year when there was all this big hype around Komisarek and how it was imperative that Montreal re-sign him to a $5M per year deal. He did the Habs a huge favour by leaving and taking the Ontario Teachers' Pension funds, and he hasn't been missed.
Michalek's signing befuddles me. I freely admit that I don't watch a lot of Phoenix Coyotes games, but even with that in mind I have not heard of this player to the extent that he's a big money guy.
Martin sounds to me like he's in the same boat as Komisarek to a degree - he benefited greatly from playing in a particular system. Komi was fortunate to be paired with Markov. Both were made to look better than they probably really are.
Hamhius benefits from being the marquee name on the blueline. You could argue Gonchar, but c'mon, Hamhius is 10 years younger. I think he was overpaid, but as some have said, who isn't on July 1st? Somebody would give him the big bucks, so that's the way that one goes.

Panthers just signed Chris Higgins to a 1 year / 1.6 M deal.
Pavel Kubina back to Tampa , 2 years at 3,85M / year
Mark Eaton 2 years , 2.5 M / year

Don't worry Flames fans, you'll re-sign him next year. ( Higgins )Last edited by Brodeur_fan666; 07-02-2010 at 03:00 PM.
