Set-Breaking
Every so often I get the temptation to break up my 07-08 Black Diamond set. It was my first real set project and it took me about 6 months to put together all 210 cards. That year holds a special place in my heart for the obvious reason that it was Carey's rookie year but also because it was my first year back in the hobby. There's a lot of really good cards in that set, and I know that if I were to break it up I could probably score some pretty decent stuff for the PC.
However, that said, outside of the Kane & Toews, would I really be able to move any of these for a good return? Gagner's dropped off considerably, Backstrom isn't a particularly strong hobby presence, and the rest of the quads aren't super-attractive hobby-wise either. I'm thinking the other BD set-builders out there have all finished the set, so it's kind of a thing where I'd move maybe 8-10 cards and be stuck with the rest.
I did break up 08-09 at the time but that was still while people were putting it together. I think I've got maybe 3 of the triple diamonds left and the rest is all the little cards. I don't know if I really want to have that again.
Thoughts? And yes, if you would take some of the guys in the set, weigh in with your bias! LOL
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I'd say no..... simply becuase (as you already said) your return isn't going to be great. I also like building sets each year (UD1/2) and wouldn't even consider it. Work too hard, spend too much money putting them together. Breaking them up will leave you with $10 worth of base (if you're lucky) a bunch of SPs (tripples and quads) you'll be able to flip for $1, if you're lucky, and you've got a few cards that are actually worth some big bucks (plus a bunch of mid range stuff - in the $10-$20 range).
Now.... if someone has made you a really nice cash offer, or card offer, for the Kane and/or Toews..... wouldn't blame you for breaking it up 'for now' to get a good deal for youself. My guess is those two cards are selling for higher than they ever had. You could make a really nice profit, and then buy new copies in 6-8 months for a lot less?
