Hello
Hey guys how's it going? I'm 17 years old, I live in Indiana. I am starting to collect baseball and basketball cards. But, i just don't know where to start. Should I just buy like, Big boxes of unopened cards, (I like old cards, like the 70's, etc.) and just hope to get a few really good ones or what?

If I were you, I'd buy cards of your favorite team's players. I'm currently collecting the Indianapolis Colts.

Hello Christian and welcome to SCF.
Is there anything you are leaning towards collecting? Certain sets, teams, or players? For vintage you could hit eBay and try to pick of some lots of older cards, or check out our vintage forums here. You might find some members selling something you like. I'm not sure how much unopened vintage boxes go for but depending on the year I think they can get pricey.
Also, please take a look at our new members rules when you get a chance, and if you have any questions about the site please feel free to contact me or another staff member, and we'll get you going.
Welcome to the hobby and good luck with your future trading.

Hi and welcome to SCF! I'd just buy what interests you - you can always post questions you have in the Card Talk sections of the sport(s) that you are interested in too, in order to garner some knowledge before making a purchase. Good luck adding to your collection!

Hi there Christian, and welcome to SCF. The best advice I could give adding to whats already been said is to build your collection around the players or teams that you like. Spend what you can afford within reason, and always remember it's a hobby so have fun.
Good luck!

Welcome to SCF AxEffect11!
If you're looking to just get started, my suggestion would be to set aside some money for your collecting. Take maybe 10-20% of that and spend it on a variety of packs from all kinds of years and sets, a box of mixed base cards, or just 5% on different card books (beckett, history books, etc.). Everyone will tell you to take that money and either sink it into buying singles or buying the most expensive wax you can find and that my idea is complete garbage.
If you're just starting through, I think the most important thing is to see what's out there. If you have no idea what you want to collect or who, how can you know what you want if you don't know what you can have?
When I first started, I wanted to be a set collector, so I bought boxes of specific sets. Later I found that storage space became an issue and I'm transitioning to a player collector. Early on in my collecting though, I picked a set that I thought was nice and had the brand name. I sunk a lot of my money into singles and boxes from that set. When I did that though, I totally missed out on some other sets that were really cool. that I just didn't know about. If I had spent some time looking through a Beckett or buying packs from other sets, I'd have found some really neat stuff and probably moved to that instead. It would mean that I'd have some money investing in base that no one might want, but its a small price to pay to get something that really hits home for your collection.
Still, that's a bunch of ramblings. Spend you money, have fun and enjoy yourself. Don't get too deep that you burn out.
