For all his life, Dalton Smith has been surrounded by some serious exercise apparatus. His father, Derrick, who had a 15-year career in professional hockey, kept the basement well-stocked with weights. His uncles, Keith and Wayne Primeau, longtime NHL players, assembled a collection of state-of-the-art machines for their workouts in Hanover, Ontario, where they spend their summers.

So it was that Dalton Smith, from a young age, saw both ends of the arena tunnel. He saw the bright lights of the rink, where the crowds roar, as well as the dark recess of the dungeon, where the quiet torture lurks.
