    In Need of Advice.

The basketball season just ended at my school. I've gained a little weight, lost all my conditioning, and probably lost a little skill with the basketball since I haven't been playing it for a while do to school. I wanna get better so I can try out next year, so I need to start training for it now, but I just can't get myself to go into the YMCA and run, lift weights, and play basketball. Actually, I play basketball at the YMCA, but not as aggressively as I should, I lift weights, but not as much as I should, and I don't run at all because I don't like to run in public. And I know that i'll get tired and I don't like people to see me all tired out and sweating and breathing like i'm about to have a heart attack, so I don't work hard. When I was on the team, everyone was breathing heavy and sweating up a storm, and we all knew each other so it was fine. I know it seems really low, but it's just my shy personality. Anyone have any advice for me? Please, i'd really like some help...

If I were in your situation, I would find a friend that you feel comfortable working out with, that way both of you might be in the same situation.

By the way, welcome to the site!

    Deadshot's advice sounds good.

I go to the YMCA regularly myself. I'm also introverted, but not to the point where it really bothers me that unfamiliar people can see me exercising. Do you have shyness in many other situations like this? If so, you might be shy to the point of Social Avoidance Disorder. If that's the case, then you might want to see someone about that - but if your shyness is just a quirk in some situations like exercising, it might just be a personal idiosyncrasy on your part.

Regardless of your choice, good luck in finding something that works for you.

I used to be really self-conscious about lifting weights in the gym. But you know what...most of the big guys were really helpful and encouraging. I mean, ya gotta start somewhere. Now I'm happy to say I can bench 225lb, and now I always encourage the newbies in the gym.

All that to say...no one is really looking down on you. 99% of the battle is in your own head. Just go for it!

(Deadshot's advice is pretty good too.)

i personally hate working out, i actually detest it. sure, a friend my help but if you guys aren't on the same routine, i.e. cardio, chest, legs, etc, then it's no use. you need self motivation and often times listening to music helps out a huge deal.the reason i force myself to lift is to be more healthy and to get bigger. however, if you're self-conscious about your looks when working out, just think about the fact that you'll never see them again. also, when working out where there's a lot of people around like the Y, it's not how much you lift, it's your fORM that people will be looking at you for. if you're form gets out of hand because you don't want to get embarrassed w/ how much you lift, you got real problems. however, if you have the proper form even if it's half the amt, that's the most important objective.

at my school we had one motto... no excuses.. just get in the gym.. work out.. end of story... if you make excuses on why you dont want to do something as piddly as run now what are you going to tell your boss in 10 years why you didnt get a project done.. as was said earlier.. its 90 percent mental. if you wanna make the team you have to get out there and work at it.. it wont just come to you
