Quote of the day by Ilya

"Ilya Kovalchuk says signing with New Jersey wasn't about the money."

    Joke of the day IMO.

Sure $102million over 17 years is a ton of money. But I don't see him as much of a greedy person as others might.

While it does sound funny, he is only going to average $6million per year while other big names will average $8million or more with their regular contract terms even if they go through 4 year contracts 2 or 3 times in their carrer. In addition, I'm sure we will look at Kovalchuk's salary further down the road and call it a bargain because of inflation and how player salaries are increasing more and more (as long as he is still producting and is healthy). And yes, he is contracted until he is 44, and won't be worth $6million per year at that time, but in the grand scheme of things, I would think he could have made a lot more signing a 4 year deal and being a UFA at only 31 when he is still a superstar.

Overall, I'm kind of on the fence, but that is the other side of the coin that I see. But like I said, don't get me wrong, $102million is a ton of money!

I think what bothers me is that one year (after the 7th season) between his NMC and his NTC......at the same time as his salary taking a HUGE dip.....8th year was something about 8mil, then 6.5, then 5.5, then 550K for the last 6 years....

Something tells me there is a plan for that one year.....either he leaves, gets bought out or retires....I seriously doubt he will be playing for 550K for the last 6 years of his contract - no matter how old he is....

Of course that's what he's going to do (retire, and never collect on the last 6 years).

That's the whole point of the 17 year contract. There's a few million bucks at the end that he'll never collect, but reduces the cap hit in the mean time.

It's a huge loophole in the CBA, that I'm sure they'll look to close next time it's up for renewal.

    Good explaination.

Kings fans are just bitter that Dean Lombardi couldn't get him.

It doesn't matter what any Kings fan has to say about Kovy. He's a prime time talent and is being paid exactly what he deserves.

One of the smartest GMs in the league created & agreed to that contract, and if anyone was going to be paying me that much....I'd say the same thing...."it's not about the money."

Kings fans, go find your self a Simon Gagne....oh, wait he's traded to the Lightning.....He wouldn't even waive his NTC to come to your pathetic team.

Maybe Frolov will come back for a $100 million contract... LOL

See ya in June when Kovy's lifting his first Cup!

What's funny is Dean Lombardi actually telling his fans that he has "a plan".

Let me also add that at a cap hit of $6 million, a price that most Kings fans would actually think is fair, and allow them to keep their "core", is not exactly "about the money"

Hope Lou has a plan because Kovys contract just got rejected by the league.
