High end products question
Hi everyone,
I recently got back in the hobby after a 12 year break or so. I bought boxes of 2009-10 UD series 1 & 2 and really enjoyed it. I was thinking of moving on to a high end product next and was wondering what were your suggestions.
I usually like to complete the base set and was wondering if it was possible with those products just buying a couple of boxes.
Thank you

SPA has a decent chance of getting a full set of base cards out of a box or two. I friend of mine and I cracked a 12-box case and came up with 14 sets of cards plus extras.
Other than that, there aren't many high-end products that give a lot of base cards per box/pack. Ultimate and Cup only give a base card or two per box....that'd be a very expensive set to complete by buying boxes.

Generally with high-end products, it's pretty tough to put together a base set because they only have 1-2 in a pack/box. In a tin of The Cup, for example, you'll maybe get 1, sometimes 2, base cards and all of your big hits. A pack of Ultimate Collection will only have 1 base card in it. Plus, due to the price point of these, the base cards alone can sell for up to 25 bucks for a player like Crosby or Gretzky.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

for high end products, buy the base set off ebay. preferably as a set as it would save you time and shipping costs compared to if you were to buy them individually.
also, you get value when you break UD Series 1 and 2. high end products aren't about value. they're simply make or break. you'd better be going into knowing you have a chance at a huge hit or nothing. anything else and you'll be setting yourself up for disappointment.
if you like breaking just to break, by all means, try the high end stuff out. it's always fun. if you prefer chasing after specific cards, let others do the breaking and scoop up the singles later on.

I think you might enjoy Artifacts. The price point isn't that much higher than UD 1 or 2 and you get a lot of bang for your buck, IMHO. But I also agree with the above poster, most "High-end" products such as OPC Premiere, Ultimate, and The Cup only provide you with 1 or 2 base cards in a pack making it very difficult to obtain a set.

Ok, thank you for your help. Just another question, if if I'm willing to put $350 for a box of The Cup, am I not better off spending the same amount of money on Ultimate collection, UD Black or OPC Premier and get more for the same price?

each higher end release is more risk/reward. same as if you would spend the $350 in 5-6 UD Series 1-2 boxes. you could get more for your money. personally, if i intended on breaking one high end product, Cup would be it. biggest and best release of the year with the biggest inserts that sell for the most money (on average).

It's especially beneficial to crack a high-end product in its first two weeks of release. eBay surfers pay the most in that initial time period, if you're looking to snag some great cards and sell off the rest to buy more.

In my opinion, if the Cup tins are packed out like last year thats the best bet. I feel that the others are very hit or miss, but last years Cup through the tins at the shop I saw broken and the message board breaks (here and there) there was only 2 or 3 that I thought ouch....the rest were pretty nice, and some were insane. I don't usually crack over $200 a box but I'm getting Cup this year!

Thank you everyone for your help. I think I'll go with a tin of The Cup just for fun and maybe try to complete the Artifacts set as it seems to be a good compromise.
