Nice weekend pick up and a $2500 Mistake
I know this may not seem like much to all the Gu and auto enthusiasts out there but it got me excited. There have been many Collegiate Collection cards put out over the years by a company called TK Legacy. Most recently they have Made series in 04 for Ohio State and Michigan that included autos and gu but in the late 90's they produced rather large 500 to 600 card sets for various schools and sports these cards were sponsored by Coke and sometimes are referred to as Coke580.
Most notable of these to Most people are the North Carolina Basketball cards which HSN sells by the 1,000s as rookie cards. These are in noway rookies but as a huge College Ball Fan I have always enjoyed the sets. They were Greatly overproduced and 36 count wax boxes normally sell in the $5 to $10 range and most sets can be found on ebay for $25 to $50.
Anyway to the point of my story, Beckett says Factory sets were produced but I guess most were opened as Ive seen sets but never in factory packaging but while at a Flea Market this weekend I found a guy with 10 sets of Auburn cards and a set of Bama cards. He had a mere $5 on the sets Beckett lists them for $35 in the annual price guide. I was low on funds but really wanted them all so I offered him $40 for all 11 sets and he broke his neck trying to ring up that sale. The factory packaging is similar to how Classic Blister packed there old Draft Pick sets.
Ive long since added Auburn to my wantlist due to the fact I can trade those Locally for Bama guys so I was pleased to find 10 Auburn sets but I was a little bummed he only had 1 Alabama set. Later I noticed the same guy had 6 Factory boxes of 92 Action Packed but these were odd, they came in a gold Velvet lined box and says it was Limited to 500 of each card. The guy told me you were garunteed a set from 2 boxes, I was broke or I would have picked up 2 for $20 I know action Packed from 92 werent worth much but the boxes looked nice and $20 isnt bad. The guy said he didnt know much about cards but that he had picked them up at an estate sale somewhere (Heard that line before)
I looked it up when I got home and the set books for $2500 with several $200 cards. The set was a High End Parallell of the Regular in which all cards were stamped with Action Packeds 24k logo and were identical to the regulars but with a Black Border. I feel like a Goat, has anyone ever seen these?

I've heard of the 24 Kt action packed cards. Not sure on values but I knew they were pretty pricey when the were out. I think they were around 1 24kt box per, but never knew there were boxes of all 24kt cards. So why don't you drive back there and buy him out. I'm sure you can make some decent cash selling the boxes on eBay.

I was intrested so I looked them up in beckett annual. It says buying one odd numbered box and 1 even numbered box would give you a full set. Im a Flea Market junkie and Im there every weekend, theres alot of out of towners who stroll in for the weekend only to go to a different city the next weekend. Im hoping maybe Ill catch him there this weekend but Ive never seen him there before so Im guessing he isnt local. Maybe he rented a space for a month, lets keep our fingers crossed as Im definatley going looking for him next weekend.

I have seen some 24k cards from that set way back in the day :new_silly those were actually really wanted cards when they first came out,I started collecting in 93 and remeber everyone looking for those and the Wild Card stripe stuff.I think the Emmitt?Barry/Montana was worth a small fortune then.

are you sure it's really worth $2500? What about those Orange Test Refractors that book for $600+ and sell for $25? (basketball)

I know what you mean KR580 but I figured at 1/5 of book it should still be worth $500

I went back this morning Jim, No luck, I even went to the Flea Market office and asked about the guy in that booth last weekend. They said he just showed up paid cash and didnt leave anything behind but a name. If I had a clue where he was from the name might help but theres about 50 of this guy listed on whitepages.com. I hate I let this one slip away I have talked to numerous people I could have made a nice chunk of change.
