Interesting article on how this year's arbitration hearings - and their aftermaths - have been very different from many years past.
  • We've had more teams walk away from awards than ever before (Niemi, MacArthur).
  • We've seen the first buyout after an arbitration award (Kennedy).
  • A team has said "give him what he wants" and then walked away from the award (MacArthur).
I've always found the business side of the game to be pretty interesting, and this is pretty neat stuff. I've often heard that arbitration hearings can be pretty nasty, but I didn't know that one hearing actually reduced Tommy Salo to tears.
