Candlepin bowling is played in only a small part of the world that I know of. That includes the Maritime provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI) and a few northeastern states like Maine and New Hampshire. The scoring is similar to 10-pin, however the balls are smaller and the pins are taller and are shaped like candlesticks. The major differences are that you throw 3 balls per frame and the deadwood (fallen pins) remain on the plate until the frame is finished. A world class candlepin bowler will have an average of 125 to 130+. Most recreational leagues have bowlers with averages ranging from low 80's to low 120's.

No, I think you are referring to 5-pin bowling. A perfect game in 5-pin is a 450. Each frame is worth 15 points and the pins are worth different amounts. The headpin is worth 5 points, each of the adjacent pins are worth 3 points, and the corner pins are worth 2 points each. In this game you throw 3? balls per frame and the plate is cleared of deadwood after each shot, similar to 10-pin. The balls are approx. 1 pound heavier than candlepins balls and slighter larger in diameter. The pins are similar to 10-pin but the have a rubber ring around the centre of them. I think a top average in this style of bowling would be in the 240+
range.
