BGS 8.5 - Is it really that bad?

I've been watching some auctions on ebay recently and I noticed a big drop off in pricing between BGS 9 and 8.5.

I have a 2006-07 Brandon Roy RC AUTO BGS Graded 9 and it looks perfect to me. Would a 8.5 be much different?

2 more questions :

1. Would you rather have a hi-end RC AUTO raw, or would you spend a little more (maybe the same) to get a card thats been graded BGS 8.5?

2. How much does a 8.5 grade compared to a 9.5 effect sale value?
I know each card is different, so lets say the card is a D Wade Bowman RC AUTO.

Naturally the higher the grade, the more it should go for. Im not sure on the value of those, but the 9 would/should sell more.

I personally would rather have the card raw. As long as I could tell it wasn't all messed up, I think the raw card holds a better value, at least to some people. Some people like that its graded and ecnased and can't be damaged.

As for number two, I would say (and this is hypothetical) that if the 8.5 goes for 100 the 9.5 should go 200+. Granted, it all depends on the grades given out to those cards. Check the population report, sometimes an 8.5 could be tops for a card if its a rough grader.

I have been the same way for about 3+ years but recently I have been thinking "atleast I know what Im getting, even if its a BGS 8.5."
Its so hard not having cards right in front of you when you buy.
Im certainly one of those people who like that the cards are encased and harder to damage etc when graded.

2 - yeah I was thinking about that price difference, especially if the card is a tough to grade.

Vikingfan (or anyone else who wants to answer this question) - if you were buying a nice Hi-End RC AUTO from one of your fav players, would you shell out $100 more dollars for a BGS 9.5 compared to a 8.5? Just curious

i dont mind 8.5. i have several and scoop em up when ever. its 8 or below thats not so good .when you look at it 8.5 are pretty darn good condition.

Unless it is a 9 or better (and most of the time it would have to be a 9.5) I'd much rather have a raw card.

Even BGS 8.5 (depend on the subgrade) is not that bad for some rare cards. I'm ok with card that is PSA 9 as well.

For me, if I just want to go for a card (to complete the player collection or to complete the set), I wouldn't pay premium for BGS 8.5 or above. If I go for the card with 9.5, I'm ok to pay extra (example: Kobe RC Finest 9.5, instead of raw Kobe Finest RC)

I'll pick up 8's at the right price and as for 8.5's I see no reason not too as long as the price isn't too far fetched compared to raw sales.

Especially if it's my PC Player, I don't care if it's an 8 or better if I want it I'll buy it.

And if all else fails, buy the 8.5 and break it out of the case :)

Recent year raw card shoule be at least BGS 9. Anything lower than BGS 9 in recent year card is just bad condition. This "rule" can be exclude in UD black or some senitive products.

Unless it's BGS 9.5+, I would rather have and would pay more for a raw card in what looks like good condition to me. On the flip side, I want nothing to do with Pristine 10s as they cost way too much relative to what a raw card would go for.
