Best Online Pricing Guide
Hey everyone. Obviously I'm new here but I hope to become valuable to some over time. I was a HUGE baseball card collector over the course of about 15 years (mid 80's to late 90's) and have countless cards. I hope I can unload some of them on you who are compiling archives of certain players (I've researched the site a little bit) and to those trying to fix up sets.
My main question is, is there a pricing guide you use for cards?? I obviously know about Beckett's from way back when but the interwebz wasn't that big back then so I just had my hard copies ha ha. Would prefer a free service that provides and accurate number to a card's value.
Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction.

Hi Jeremy. Welcome to SCF.
I have an online subscription for Beckett baseball, but I personally don't really know of any others, let alone free. SCF will be rolling out it's own OPG sometime next year. You can check out a recent discussion about that in this thread: https://www.sportscardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1180968
Please take a look at our new member rules when you get a chance and let me know if you have any questions about the site. I'll be happy to get you going.

Hey OldSchoolGuy,
Hopefully I can help answer your question. I'm more of a hockey collector, but what happened in Hockey, might also have happened in baseball. Basically in the late 80's to early 90's there was over production of everything. Very few cards from that era are worth much at all. There are some thought that are worth quite a bit, but the number is very small. mid 80's & late 90's are a bit better (some late 90's stuff is particularly sought after these days)
Beckett is still the premier guide for value. However, now a days, we have online price guides and the actual printed book (book published 6 times year instead of the 12 it used to be).
Unfortunately, there are a few problems. There are some times when the online price guide and the printed price guide have different values. 99% of the time, they're the same, but watch out when they differ because some people are hard core book values and others are hard core online values.
The second problem is that Beckett value now has to include certain modifiers. 75% of cards in beckett sell for 5-20% of the beckett Hi value (9think no name rookies, base cards, inserts, etc.) Another 15% sell for between beckett LO & HI value (think star player auto or GU, etc). Another ~7% sell for HI value (recent releases, short prints incorrectly identified in Beckett, cards with incredible patches, etc.) and finally, the last 3% sell for above beckett HI value (very rare 90's inserts, cards of super hot players, for example, if they just pitched a no-hitter or something, etc.).
Beckett is still the standard, but there are others in the market. Tuff stuff posts their guides online for free, which Beckett no longer does. In Canada, we also have the Charlton, but its as thick as a dictionary, so no one really has one handy.
Hope this helps & if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send me a PM.
Cheers,
reoddai

Welcome OldSchoolGuy!
I too am new here and have been collecting baseball cards for some time. If you don't mind trading cards in a little rough shape, I can help you out with the older stuff (70's mainly). My later stuff ('80's on) has been carefully handled or have been in 9-pocket sleeves since I got them. I hope to sometime get a list together of what I have & need to fill my sets.
I am not worried so much about condition as filling my sets first and then try and better the condition.
Maybe we can help each other out sometime. Until then - Welcome!
