Dion Phaneuf most overrated player according to his peers.
It’s may have something to do with his perceived personality, but Leafs defenceman Dion Phaneuf certainly isn’t a hit with his peers.
According to a Sports Illustrated Poll scheduled to hit newstands tomorrow, Phaneuf is the runaway winner as the NHL’s most overrated player. Of the 272 players asked, 21% listed Phaneuf, who came to the Leafs in a blockbuster deal with Calgary.
Second on the list was Rangers defenceman Scott Gomez (seven percent) followed by Canadiens centre Scott Gomez (six per cent) and Rangers pest Sean Avery (five per cent.)

Considering Phaneuf doesn't skate very well, doesn't pass the puck very well, and is mediocre (at best) in his own end..... "OVERRATED" is very good word to describe him, he deserves the title, and I'm not shocked in the least.
The problem is that he DOES have an exceptionally good cannon from the blue line, and he throws HUGE open ice hits (they often leave him out of position, but that goes back to the 'mediocre at best' play in his own end). As a result he ends up on a lot of highlight reels, which translates to people actually thinking he's a legit star.
Avery is a funny one. He won the NHL player poll for most overrated (published by THN). They did an interview with him, that went something like this:
THN: So, you were voted most overrated by your peers. What do you think of that?
Avery: Hunh? That doesn't make any sense. Who has ever said that I'm any good? Don't you have to be considered a good player to be overrated?
THN: Well, someone must think you're good. You won.
Avery: How many votes did Shane Doan get?
It went on a lot longer than that, but man was it funny.

Ouch! For this one it all comes down to that contract. If Scotty were making $4M it's nobody's concern at all. But he's making almost double that, so people expect much more out of him than could ever be realistic. If there were ever an argument to be made for the NHL switching to non-guaranteed contracts a la the NFL, this is it.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Phaneuf is severely overrated. He is the Ethan Moreau of Defensemen. A veritable Penalty Machine. He takes needless penalties at inopportune times.

Yeah, but at least Chopper used to be an effective 3rd line grinder... who didn't take so many dumb penalties. Once he lost a step in stride (part age, part injuries) stupid hooks and holds became way too common place for him.

He was one of my favorite players when he was on the Hawks. I hated to see him go. He was a good player on some lousy Hawks teams.

I think he needs a real coach or a year in the AHL, the Sutters style that they wanted him to play in Calgary just doesn't work anymore. I think he has alot of potential but some conditioning or a great coach and he could turn into a premier defensman. But as he currently stands, very, very overrated.

Wow.... now that was a deal that happened a LONG time ago....
Moreau + Chad Kilger + Christian Laflamme for Boris Mironov.... if my memory serves me correctly.
