    2010 Tri-Star OBAK

    2010 Tri-Star OBAK

    Tri-Star Sell Sheet

    Per Box Items
    20 Packs per box
    6 Cards per pack
    11 Hits per box
    4 Autograph cards
    2 Parallel cards
    1 Mini parallel
    3 Short prints
    1 T4 limited edition cabinet card (Box-Topper)

The standard sized cards have either a color or black and white, posed or action shots of the player superimposed over colored scenic backgrounds. The card fronts have a simple white border. The set name is on the upper right corner and the player name is on the bottom of the card front. The card backs do not have a picture or statistical information of any kind. The mono-chrome print backs list the set name, player name, the city name of the parent ball club and moderate career highlights. The card backs also feature a slogan or phrase used to describe the player and or the original OBAK cigarettes.

    What I Pulled:
    104 unique cards
74/109 base set cards - 68% of the base set + the checklist card
    17 duplicates
    4 serial numbered autos
1 serial numbered auto box topper :D
    14 minis
    3 serial numbered base cards
    1 serial numbered mini parallel
    2 variation base cards
    5 variation mini cards

    Base Card Front and Back:

    The Hits:
    Reymond Fuentes Auto #/50
    Jason Kipnis Auto #/50
    Jeff Burroughs Auto #/125
    Jim Abbot Auto #/125
    "Crash" Davis mini #/50
    Tom Paciorek #/50
    Jim Creighton #/50
    Jason Heyward *variation* #/50

    5X7 Boxtopper Donavan Tate Auto #3/5! :D

    ************************************************** *******

I have never opened a "retro" or throwback set design before. Thanks to 2010 OBAK I will open a few more! I love the look of the 1910 OBAK replica design. I also really enjoyed the history that can be gleaned from these cards. I pulled cards of the founders of Coke, Pepsi, Miller, and inventors of the catcher's mask, pitching signs, and Hinze ketchup! Of course not having a MLB license Tri-Strar is limited to minor league and retired players and airbrushing of team logos. That does not take much away from the set tough. There is a good mix of minor league players and recently retired stars. Austin Jackson and Jason Heyward are probably the biggest two current players in the set, but I also pulled cards of Andre Dawson, Cal Ripken, Roger Clemens and Johnny Bench. The autographs are sticker autos and I disagree with calling numbered parallel cards "hits", but I was really confused by the stated odds and variation breakdown. I did not pull any of the "short print" cards on the checklist, but I did pull the autographed and low numbered box topper and one of the rarer variation cards, I think. So are those two my stated short print cards? I pulled three regular sized serial numbered parallel cards instead of two, so is one of those my short print? The variations are also hard to decipher. The check list tells us what players/card numbers have an image variation, slogan variation or a image AND slogan variation. Other than the variation itself those cards do have the card number with either a circle, square or triangle around it. I did pull a triangle variation mini parallel of Heyward with a different image and slogan. So is that one of my short prints? There are about two dozen or so different slogans, so they are re-used on a few different card backs. Of all of the slogans available to use however, I found it very funny that the slogan on the back of Jose Canseco's card is "CLEAN-WHOLESOME."

    The Bottom Line:
I give 2010 Tri-Star OBAK a BUY rating. The collation is good with not too many doubles. You should be able to complete the base with with two boxes. 2010 Tri-Star OBAK certainly fits in with the popularity of retro and throwback designed sets. History buffs will also get a kick out of this set!

    The Final Score:
    Final Ratings (Out of 5):
    Base set collect-ability: 3/5
    Big-hit Hunter: 4/5
    Prospector Hunter: 4/5
    Overall Design: 4/5
    Fun: 5/5
    Value: 5/5
    Re-buy: 5/5
    Overall Quality: 4/5

    Overall: 34/40 (85% = B)

Great review and solid box. If the Jim Abbott is available please let me know. Weird, because I got the same prospect autos in my 1 box too.
