His height is more important. If he's 6'2", 140 isn't a good aim, but if he's 5'7" or so, it's realistic.
Anyway, three small meals is tough to abide by...even as a 5'2" woman, I can't do that, so I eat several small meals throughout the day (usually around 200 calories or so each). I lost a bunch of weight from 2008-2009 by reducing my caloric intake and doing lots of incline treadmill cardio consistently over the period of many months. I've been 5'2" 115 most of my life except for 2007-2008, but thanks to the caloric reduction and incline treadmill exercises from 2008-2009, I went back down to 115 again. I'm also weightlifting a lot now, so much more of that is muscle than it once was.
The main thing is just to watch the calories, eat smaller/more consistent meals, make sure your diet is a good blend of green veggies/protein (fish especially)/mostly unsaturated fats (i.e., nuts)/complex carbs with fiber, and to exercise twice a week at the minimum.

no offense but you no clue what you are talking about.
I have lost over 60 lbs in less then 2 months by CUTTING ALL EXERCISE OUT.
I do have a very physically demanding job, however exercise is not a sure thing unless you know what you are doing.
I lost my 60+ with only diet.
Ohh yea still going. My opinion if its hard after 1 week then you need to stop dieting.
Also gatorade is terrible, better off with diet soda. Thats what Ive been drinking plus coffee with sugar free sweetner and water.
Eat a lot of vegetables, salads and protiens from meat, chicken and pork

yea I forgot about the fatty acids. You need them its very important especially at the begining. If you dont eat ALOT of fish you can buy liquid fish oil. Thats what I did and the weight all but fell off.

I agree to an extent. Exercise is a helpful adjunct, but given that running a mile on a flat surface burns just 100 calories or so, it isn't as important as diet (I did treadmill on an incline because that burns 2 to 3x the calories of flat surface running, but that's still fairly limited). Look at most of the meals people eat at fast food or regular restaurant joints - these meals are ridiculous in their calorie content, many exceeding 1,000 calories! Whether these are mostly in carbs or fat isn't as important as the total caloric load (I used to disbelieve calorie counting until I actually tried it, btw). Even a 5'9" man is only supposed to consume around 2,500 calories a day on average, so if he is eating three of these meals on top of snacks like candy or whatever, he is going to gain weight. You can cut a lot out of your diet alone, even without exercise, and still lose weight. Smaller meals are around 200-400 calories and work much better than 3 large ones. I'd aim for 4-6 a day if you are a guy.
Also, yeah, fish oil of any kind is great.

60 lbs in less than 2 months is extremely unhealthy in the long run, and diet soda is one of the worst things you can drink, as with anything carbonated. and dieting is a no no, diets do not work never have never will. You need a total life change. keep sugar substitutes to a bare minimum as they are also very unhealthy for the body. you need a proper mix of eating healthy, moderate exercising of the mind and body.

Excellent advice, if you treat it as a "diet" it will never work. It will only work if that just becomes the way you live. Also agreed that avoiding sugar substitutes is good advice and you will need a balance to have success.

definitely drop the gatorade and just drink water. It's a great habit to get into. plus it's cheaper when you go out to eat. lol.
Eating more calories in the morning is the way to go as well. It's very hard to do because we are trained to eat more at dinner. Plus that is when we have more time. It's rough but ideal. I'd recommend staying off the scales. People that weigh themselves a lot get discouraged if they have a good week and don't see a considerable loss. That can mess with your head and you tell yourself why bother. Also if you hit a rough patch just accept it and move on. Don't dwell on it and let it get you make to your old ways. If you are working out a lot one or two fails when it comes to diet won;t kill you.
good luck. That's a lofty goal.
