The Canadiens are less than a week away from the regular-season opener in Toronto and they still have a lot of work to do.
That was evident from Thursday night’s 5-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.
“We weren’t moving our feet,” said newly minted captain Brian Gionta. “Right from the start, we were back on our heels and we took penalties we shouldn’t have. There were too many mistakes. We got outworked. That’s definitely not where we want to be.”
Buffalo scored three power-play goals while the Canadiens went 0-for-6 with the extra man, but Gionta said it’s too simple to blame the loss only on special teams.
“The concern isn’t necessarily with the special teams,” Gionta said. “It’s all over. (If) you’re not moving and you’re taking penalties, it kinda ruins your momentum and you can’t get anything going. It goes hand in hand, the 5-on-5 and the special teams.”
Head coach Jacques Martin said the special teams have been a problem, but he said one factor is that the Canadiens haven’t the best lineup on the ice for any of the six exhibition games.

One bright side Habs fans can look forward to:

“We haven’t had a game where we’ve had Gionta, (Scott) Gomez, (Michael) Cammalleri and (Tomas) Plekanec on the same team.”
