The Cup Secondary Sales Not Impressing

On eBay at least. I thought they would do much better this early at least. I saw several 1/1 plates, mostly of unproven or little heard of rookies. One sold for just over 3 Bucks. The Rookie Patches /249 are selling between $12.00 and $38.00 except for Tavares. The ones fetching $38.00 and slightly above, have to have a radical patch to gain the money.

Tavares moving good, but nothing much over $135.00 for a final selling price. The odd crazy Niemi Patch has also been taking on too much money. The Blue Stanley Cup Autos aren't impressing, and some HOF players Patch Auto's or Patches aren't getting. any bids when opening at $29.99, some HOF quads and base jerseys are sitting in the starting blocks at $19.99

Seems like you could pick any 8-9 cards and come in well under $300.000. Heck you could get 10 Rookies Patches /249 and still have money in your pocket from a box.

Appears to a big risk to take to net one card that you hope sells for over $150.00. eBay is not the only marketplace, I realise, however, it does dictate true market behaviour.

When referring to Tavares what cards are you using for your analysis?? The /99 RAP's are selling for upwards of 1 grand with the Duchene and JVR's slightly behind it. Niemi's are moving really well if they have a nice patch and the same could be said for Eller, Myers, Monster and a few other /249 rookies.

The press plates have always been a hot/cold seller unless it's a big name and is Auto'ed. The draft boards and Limited logos also sell quite well on the secondary market, and a really nice patch on the LL can bring a huge chunk of change. Last but certainly not least the "Retro Rookie" cards have also been bringing in large sums of money for those lucky enough to pull one. I think it is easier to break even from a tin than what you think.

You've given 6-7 examples in a set with thousands of cards. If you paid $300.00 for a box (and not many have), every card has to sell on average for $50.00 to break even. Most people when buying a box are spending over $325.00. I don't know how that's possible to get your ROI with one base card and one Rookie guaranteed that are numbered to /249.

I saw the draft board Autos, I also saw 3 of them out of 5 sell for under $40.00.

Hey don't shoot the messenger....... this is actually happening. It has nothing to do with me. As mentioned, I wish they were bringing in more money as I hate to see people come up short.

I think they've been trending slightly downward over the past few days, but I'm still not sure that you're going to get six good cards for under $300.

The printing plates are hit and miss, depending on how badly some people want them. I know that I've personally overpaid for a couple but I don't really care because there's no way I wasn't going to get them. I've also noticed some really weird results, like this Enroth rookie. I paid under $100 for two of them, then watched this one last night:

I don't think this should be a surprise to anyone.

Nobody is going to pay big bucks for a no-name rookie. Doesn't matter if it's a great looking patch, or a 1/1 plate. Some guy that had a cup of coffee in the NHL this year.... and may never get back there again (or be a 4th liner, if he does) why would someone spend $50+ on a card of him?

ROI is VERY risky with high end products like this. There are plenty of cards that will do very well in sales...... and I would suspect that if you're busting a whole case, you'll get one or two big money cards that will pay for a couple of boxes each..... but we see time and time again that even SP'd RCs with patches and autos don't hold much value, if it's a player that nobody has heard of.

Yes, a little tough when there are 4-5 really decent rookies.
Tavares, Leino, Niemi, Myers and a couple more

Now imagine The Cup for 1990-91 and it's rookies:

    Jagr
    Brodeur
    Bondra
    Fedorov
    Nolan
    Cujo
    Recchi
    Graves
    Numminen
    Healy
    Tinordi
    Schneider
    Brind'A Mour
    Sundin
    Mogilny
    Modano
    Blake
    Roenick
    Lindros
    Ricci
    Nedved
    Primeau
    Domi
    Gaetz
    Draper
    Fiset
    Cassels
    Gellinas
    Galley
    Ricci
    Reichel
    Holik
    Hackett
    Stevens
    Semenov
    Sydor
    Essensa
    Matteau

12 easy potential Hall of Famers from 90-91. Wow

15 years from now you could say the same for this group. Just got to wait and see.

The 1990-91 RC class was stacked, but there's a couple of ***s that need to go along with it.

Some of those players (Lindros, Brodeur for sure) did not play in a game that year. Under current rules, they wouldn't have had RCs for another 2-3 years.

Also, some of those players (Belfour, Schneider, probably more) would have had cards out earlier.... 90-91 was the year their first cards came out, but not the year they played their first games.

Your point is very valid though. If modern day cards existed back then, 1990-91 would have been a VERY good year.

I just got back into collecting when last year's cup was released so I don't know what the secondary market was like back then. What was it like last year?
