There are lots of "unnatural" substances in food already - why aspartame gets singled out more than others is beyond me. People railed against it a few decades ago, stopped talking about it for awhile, and now all of a sudden there is a resurgence in anti-aspartame blogs and web sites again. I've seen these sites, and while I think there's a point (like anything else) where people can put their health at risk when over-consumption comes into play, I haven't seen any data or evidence that _moderate_ consumption of aspartame is deleterious in any significant fashion (the pre-term birth study concerned four beverages a day, which is significantly more than I drink). With very few exceptions, the stuff I read on this link, and stuff I've read from other links, mainly talk about how extreme quantities of it can affect rats.
BTW, if we are talking strictly about blood sugar, I can say from personal experience as a type 1 diabetic that regular soda has a frickload greater impact on my blood sugar levels than anything aspartame does. Perhaps it's different for type 2 diabetics, but given the public's increasing laziness in differentiating between the two types, it's getting harder to glean what specifics people are talking about when they say something is "bad for diabetics."

Aspartame can also mimic the effects of Multiple Sclerosis if you are allergic to it.
