    Tavares Leaves Game With Concussion

    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=336891

Sniper John Tavares is the latest victim of the injury bug as he suffered a concussion in the first period of Saturday's game against the Dallas Stars after he was elbowed in the head by Adam Burish.
Tavares was forced to leave the game and did not return.

Didn't see it - headshot? Early application of the new rules possibly?

Awesome. Yet another player goes down from concussion.

Fair enough the NHL is trying to clamp down on this by increasing padding on equipment etc etc, but hey Bettman, how about this? How about coming down HARD on players like Matt Cooke, Adam Burish et al to try and teach these and others a lesson! It's getting out of hand.

As Chris Pronger once sarcastically said - "Who the [heck] is Adam Burish?" Brilliant.

With regards to JT91, I wish you a speedy, but healthy recovery!! The league is a better place with the likes of you than the likes of Cooke and Burish!

Did you see the play? Burish wasn't even trying to throw a hit. It looks more like they just skated into each other. It looks to me like Tavares got hurt more from a whiplash action then the actual "hit".

For anyone who wants to see the clip:

It was the result of two players not really watching where they were going..... and shoulders bumped. The problem must have been the way JT landed.

I watched the play and I didn't see his head get hit by Burish or going down.

My guess is, if he has a concussion, he has what we call in the EMS field a coup, contra-coup injury.

When we go on calls where people are involved in high speed motor vehicle accidents, sometimes just their head whipping around from going one speed to a complete standstill can cause a concussion. (think the first law of motion, inertia)

We call the coup injury the initial impact of the brain inside the skull and, though there is not always enough force, the contracoup results when the brain bounces back and strikes the opposite side of the skull.

These typically happen, for example like in the aforementioned car accident, head, windshield, brain inside skull, bounces back, other side of skull. But like I said, severe whiplash or change of direction of the head from one motion to another can cause this injury with a concussion being secondary. I bet that is the case here.

SWEET! Paramedic school is finally paying off! I can now analyze hockey injuries!

    Thanks Barrie :)

After reading it, it actually makes a lot of sense (how an injury like this would happen).

I have had 4 concussion and 2 were do to car accidents. So I kind of know what you are talking about. If you look at the replay tavares was still conscious after the hit, he should be ok in a couple of days.

6-4 over the Rangers without him, let the rest of the kids build some confidence , might be the best thing for the Islanders right now.
