    Mtl card show

    Hi guys,

was the Montreal card show over the weekend and have a little rant against the dealers in the show... So here it goes:

I was walking around and asking selling price for some of the habs centennial induction auto. Saw a few selling:

    Jacques Laperriere 300$ - bv 60$
    Scotty Bowman 500$ - bv 100$
and Elmer Lach I think for also 500$ bv 100$

I was shocked about those selling prices and decided to try and sell or trade those that I have...

    Denis Savard bv 50
    Serge Savard bv 80
    Henri Richard bv 80

So go to the dealer that was selling the Laperriere. First thing he does, opens the beckett, I told him right away that I didn't care about beckett pricing because I think they are totally under evaluated. I tought the dealer would have agreed since he was selling a 60bv at 300$. So he
offers me 200$ for the 3 above + a 2004-05 Sidney Crosby ITG auto.

I told him this wasn't an acceptable deal and mention the price he was trying to get for the laperriere. He replied that Laperriere was a way better and more requested players than the 3 I wanted to sell. OK how is Jacques Laperriere better than Serge Savard?

The other dealer was a lot worse, he goes and tells me that he knew someone that needed the Serge Savard to complete the set... I said, it's your's for 100$ which was declined...

Dealers needs to understand that collector are not all dumb and that Beckett is a GUIDE not a bible... it's not always accurate.

Sorry for the long read, makes me fell better!

When it comes to Centennial, Beckett is completely out to lunch and individuals have to do their own research well in advance and have a solid idea in mind for what they want to get for their cards. Those HOF Induction Inks are a textbook example.

His selling prices are definitely way high according to the information that I've compiled. I haven't tracked the HOF Induction Inks for a couple months, so there may have been some more recent sales at higher prices, however...
Lapperriere I have a recorded sale of $91.
    Bowman I have $81 and $68.
    Lach I have $199 and $186.

    For yours:
    D. Savard: $72
    S. Savard: $113
    Richard $98

So his cash/trade offer wasn't completely out of line, depending on what that particular Crosby auto will sell for. There's a couple active listings on the Bay of that card at $250 but no bites on it, of course.

It's a very tough go when there's no reliable resource to turn to and guys are primarily looking to sell rather than trade. Guys behind the tables are usually looking to make money rather than swap stuff unless it's to their advantage. Nature of the beast, as it were.

It's too bad you couldn't make it happen, but them's the breaks.

Also, a minor edit to your post was made - please refrain from the use of the word "retard" as it is offensive to some when used in that context.

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Beckett was way off in regard to pricing the centennial. I know I am holding to mine and they are a great trading tools with any habs collector as everyone eye pop up when they see some of these cards.

Montreal is the team with the most collectors so don't expect to buy these at BV. Now other may help but some have seen price no one ever tought it would sell for but it did at many ocassion. Richard got a nice sale with one habs ink. So I am not surprised some price are so high in a Montreal card show. Seller know they will sell them and are not in a rush to sell it to the first comer.

Not the best place to sell them either, if you ask me. But demand is there and seller play the game and boost the price. Nothing new under the sun.

I definitely understand where you're coming from - there's a lot of folks out there that will haggle and can be talked down on their prices, and for whatever reason that may be entirely justifiable this fellow isn't one of them. As we were discussing in the memoriesonice thread a couple weeks ago, it only takes one deep-pocketed collector that is willing to pay what the seller wants to complete a deal. There are a lot of wealthy collectors of Canadiens cards and memorabilia out there, and this fellow is holding out hope that he can encounter one. C'est la vie.

That would make for a very interesting article! Would you be interested in writing a combination of a show review and the pricing situation with the Habs Centennial set?

Let me know if you're interested!

    Thanks
    Karine
