We also have a free inventory You can use on the site under your account name. We maintain all hockey card set s checklist and you can just search by set name or cards direclty. This is a great way to manage you card for trade or your collection item (PC).
So if you buy boxes, you can then add all the cards you pick and maybe even scan the nicer one and upload them in your inventory.

Do you and your son's live in Columbus? I wouldn't want to toot my horn, but I'm probably the most active Blue Jackets collector here on SCF.
UD S1 and S2 are definitely a good start. You have the chance of pulling the top rookies of the year and one of their most wanted rookie at that. I started out this same way. Of course you'll always get more for you money if you just buy singles off ebay, but the thrill of opening packs will always need to be fed.

We are in Columbus - I noticed that you collected Kris Russell as I was reviewing various threads and found that interesting!
Victory and Collector's Choice is what I've been buying him from the retail stores on clearance. These are basically just packs he can open and for the most part, cards he can do whatever he wants to with (carry around in his pocket, for example).
The UD1 or other stuff is going to be our "real" collection.
Along those lines - can anyone give me some quick advice on proper storage for base cards and what you recommend for the higher quality cards like YG and such?

Normally I have 5000 count boxes that I put my base into, like this link. My personal collections and traders I keep in similar boxes, normally smaller. Valuable cards should at least be kept in this format; Card, Penny Sleeve, Toploader. The high-end valuable stuff I always put into a one touch magnetic holder, like this link. Now toploaders can come in various sizes from a base size (35 point) to larger The Cup cards (180 point).
What part of town are you in? I live in Grove City. I work in Hilliard and frequent Chuck and Barb's Baseball Cards in Upper Arlington. Chuck is a very nice guy and loves his hockey. He normally has the largest hockey selection in the city. There are also card shows in Columbus at least one a month (normally not a lot of hockey, but a little.) I believe in a few weeks there is a card show at the Tuttle Mall in Dublin.
If you'd ever like to meet up at the LCS or show I can always give you some more tips and maybe some CBJ goodies for your sons.Last edited by v3rs3; 11-03-2010 at 05:08 PM.

I'm north of town off Polaris but am all over the city for work. I want to hit some of the upcoming shows as longs as the kids hockey doesn't conflict. I've been searching for shows - pm me if you hear any more details. I'd definitely be interested in meeting up with you at a show.
Thanks!

The knight of columbus show is one of the better shows in Ohio. It a regular show and they do have some hockey. As many dealers from out of state do come to it. Of course the Buckeyes get first love.
I am sure you and v3rs3 will be meeting up soon.
Have you thought about letting your son pick a player and just focus on that player for his pc. You could collect a player as well and compare your collections with each other as you both grow your pc. Look forward to hearing your story of your sons and you collecting together.
DONCard Supplies
Toploaders 60 point $4, 100 point $7, 140 point $4, 190 point $3, 240 point $3
Soft Sleeves Standard $1 and Thick $1.50
TOP-LOADER 3X4,100 CT PENNY SLEEVES INCLUDED $11

So would I be insane to order a case of 10/11 UD1? My thought is that it should give me a complete set plus hopefully some decent trade material. It's a large initial investment and definitely not something I would do every year, but I was thinking of a way to 'jump start' our collection.
Thoughts?

Opening a case is awesome! UD1 provides great value for the price as well

Welcome to the hobby and the boards! It is a lot of fun and you and your kids will love it.
If you are going to order a case, 10-11 Series I is a very solid choice. Good value, especially out of the chute. Very strong crop of rookies this year as well. You can probably put together a complete set with young guns out of the case and have plenty of other trade material as well. You might even hit a big HG parallel or auto to make a good chunk of your money back. I know others have said sticking to singles is the best bang for your buck, and it is, but opening packs with your kids and having them get excited in what they/you hit will I'm sure be worth it.

Welcome to the hobby! Its going to be a lot of fun.
It won't be easy at first, but figuring out exactly what you and your sons like to collect will be key to enjoying the hobby. The earlier you can define it, the better. That isn't to say you can't change your focus in the future, but like you mentioned in your first post, this hobby can be overwhelming with the number of cards available.
If you have the budget, getting a case of something like UD1 would be a good experiment. Put together a set, trade some cards, sell some cards, set some aside to start a player or team PC, etc. By the end of that, you should have some direction on what you and your sons like to do.
