How my wife screwed up and ruled at the same time...
I'm currently in the hospital after getting hit by a truck and on Sunday I was really feeling depressed so my wife said she would go out and buy me some cards to help raise my spirits. We agreed that $25 would be a decent amount and I asked her to pick me up some packs. I always like opening packs, don't we all?
Anyway, she came back about 2 hours later with a small plastic bag. I open the bag... No packs.
But, I couldn't believe what she did with that $25. I pulled out a stack of top loaders and a graded card. Here's what was there...
Michael Turner - 04 Bowman Chrome RC Auto
Rod Rutherford - 04 Sage Hit Auto
Dwan Edwards - 04 Press Pass Auto
Arnaz Battle - 03 Sage Hit Auto
Taylor Jacobs - 03 Sage Hit Auto
Kliff Kingsbury - 03 Sage Hit Auto
George Wrighster - 03 Sage Hit Auto
Cie Grant - 03 Sage Hit Auto
Charles Grant - 02 Bowman's Best Auto
Jeff Kelly - 02 Bowman's Best Auto
Terry Charles - 02 Bowman's Best Auto
James Lofton - 01 Donruss Classics Auto
Kenechi Udeze - 04 Bowman's Best RC Auto #060/499 Regular Version, not the Green
Ryan Krause - 04 Bowman's Best RC Auto
Erik Jensen - 04 Bowman's Best RC Auto
Derek Abney - 04 Bowman's Best RC Auto
Samie Parker - 04 Bowman's Best RC Auto Green #460/499
Tom Brady - 02 Bowman's Best Blue #222/300
Now for $25, these 18 cards would have been enough for me, but she paid $15 for them. They were $1 each or 6 for $5. She stopped by a large flea market that my parents were set up at to tell them how I was doing and she came across this stand with football cards. She cleared all the autos out the dollar box and grabbed the Brady because she knows I used to be a Patriots fan. Then there was the graded card that she paid $10 for...
Joe Scudero - 56 Topps Graded PSA 8 :new_shock

I saw this and was delighted because you don't see many cards from the 50s graded that high. When I looked it up on Beckett.com, the card itself is a Single Print that books for $22. It's NM-MT so that doubles the value (according to Beckett) to $44 and since it's graded at an 8, who knows. I've seen 8s from the late 50s go for 3-4 times bv.
Not bad for someone who knows nothing about the hobby huh? She was also the one who scanned the Scudero and uploaded it to my website. lol
Then yesterday she walks into my room with a black box. She puts it on the tray in front of me and says she wanted to save it until I got home. But, since noone knows when that is, she decided to give it to me. It was a beautiful 03 Absolute Memorabilia Glass Plaque of Drew Bledsoe #/50 with a jersey piece in the base. She forgot to take the price tag off of it and it read $10. I couldn't believe she only paid 10 for it so I asked her if this was right and she said no.
She got it from the same stand at the flea market that she got the auto cards from and she told the vendor there was a scratch on it. Without even blinking, she says, he lowered it to $5. I looked up the value on Beckett.com, it books $80. lol
She knows nothing about collecting and complains when I spend $100+ on a box, but she brings in about $300 bv in cards and a plaque for $30.
She's definetely a keeper.

:new_shock Hope you get feeling better. My wife is the same way your wife is man. She got me a couple packs of cards at Wal-Mart one day and I pulled a Hideki Matsui Upper Deck First Pitch RC which has a BV of $15-20 right now. I think married men should let their wives pick out their boxes and packs. We might have better pulls. :new_squar

My wife always ends up with the good pulls. Very first auto I ever got was pulled by my wife, first multi-colored patch was pulled by her, first rookie out of SP Authentic was her... When I buy wax, I usually save some for her. She doesn't always appreciate the amount of money I spend on wax (no wife would) but if I bring her some stuff to open once in a while, she's happy. She even says "those suck" if she doesn't pull anything, then starts looking around to see what else I bought so she can open something else. :) Should've seen her with Heritage this year. 27 boxes I bought, she opened 10 or 12 of them and then sorted them all numerically for me! BTW, she also pulled both autos and half the GU I got from it. ;) She even sits all day with me at the local and national shows and doesn't complain! She even gets excited when she sees the high rollers come strolling up to the table (she remembers them better than I do)
So needless to say, she sounds like my wife and she definitely sounds like a keeper my friend!
That James Lofton auto is a helluva pickup for $1 too, definitely some good trade bait for when you get back on your feet.
Once again, best wishes in a speedy recovery. I hope the hobby, and SCF especially can be a small part of making your recovery a bit easier. :)

When my daughter was born in June, everything went on the back burner for her and I stopped playing in August after GenCon (gaming convention in Indianapolis, Indiana) because I had a hard time leaving home to go. I traveled alot playing Raw Deal (PA, NJ, NY, VA, WV, NC, SC, IN, IL, and Wisconsin - not sure of the abbr.) and with Lita in my life, I just couldn't do it anymore. I play a little now and then for fun, but i'm not nearly as competitve as I used to be.

If you check out the 2004 World Championships reports, there is a nice write up about me going 3-0 in the draft portion being the only person who beat the man who would eventually become the 2004 World Champion, Wes Victory (yes, that's his real name).
