Coach's Challenge Proposal Rejected
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=340495
The NHL's general managers have shelved a proposal to allow coaches to challenge goal calls.
Panthers GM Dale Tallon put the item on the agenda, but didn't receive much support from his colleagues.
Florida lost a game in Toronto earlier this season when the referees missed a blatant goaltender interference call, and Tallon wanted to give coaches the ability to challenge similar plays in the future.
"We had a lot of conversation about it but it's a dead issue," said Tallon.
Too bad - I think it's an idea that has some merit. Anything that reduces the referee's ability to determine a game via a horrible call is a good idea, in my books.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I didn't like the idea.
The only changes I want is the removal of the trapezoid. No linesmen interference on face offs (just drop the puck you pansies), and no touch icing.

that would be a great idea as thats what they have in the national lacrosse league coaches get charged a timeout if the goal is good when they go to video review

I don't like it, think it would slow down the flow of the game as everything would have to stop while the refs takes a look. There's enough of that when goals are under review. Plus I could see how some coaches would abuse that rule, maybe just to create a stoppage to give their guys on the ice a breather

exactly, all it would be would be an additional timeout for strategy or rest instead of actually using it for its intended purposes

If it turns out that the original call stood, that's the team's timeout for the game, so other than a couple minutes to look upstairs, what's the big deal? Remember as proposed it can only be used on a goal-related play. It's not as though Ron Wilson can challenge an offside.

I'm not sure that "coaches challenge" is the best way to go..... though I don't think it would really slow the game down all that much. As has been already pointed out - if you're wrong, you lose your time out.
Even if both coaches use their challenges, and both are correct (thus, not losing the time-outs) we're talking about what? And extra 5 minutes added to the total time it takes to play a game?
