first off, welcome to the best addiction you can have!!!! until you start getting into high end stuff lol..it was in the summer of 1997..i was living in bristol rhode island at the time..one day i had to go to the corner store and when i went to the counter to pay..i noticed a box of playoff contenders football.( i know not hockey related )..and it had a big red sticker on the box that read look for 1/1's..so i said why not and got a few packs ..and that was that..i was hooked ever since..i would go away from collecting here and there..i would build up a collexction and eventually sell it..of course for a fraction of what i put into it...mostly because i needed the funds at that time..but i always at some point get that feeling of how much i missed opening a pack of cards and getting that rush when i would get that player i was hoping for or just a great hit!!! and i would start up again...so, now it has been one year since i started back collecting and i have no plans on stopping..i on the other hand will be slowing down a lot more since i have twin girls and a boy coming in march!!!! but even the joy of three little ones won't keep me away from the hobby..this is the only thing i truly enjoy and believe me,, i am the type of guy that get's on these kicks and eventually i get tired of it..a few examples??? i am a huge pink floyd fan..so i decided to play the guitar!!! yep,, that lasted a little over a year..oh,, and then i saw the movie blood sport..( best martial arts movie ever!!! imo ) and yep!!!! i took kenpo karate!!! i made it to blue belt..lol... but collecting card board??? never got board with it..and i don't think i ever will...oh and one more thing..you picked the best sport in the world to collect!!! i started out collecting football..but when i got back into it?? i tried hockey and never looked back...there are so many amazing players to collect and the cards are just beautiful..and you will find that the fans and the collectors on here and anywhere are the most passionate best collectors out there...so with my long story sit back and enjoy the ride..you will love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Started collecting in 1979, age 7. Was at my cousins house and my 9 year old cousin had a bunch of 78-79 and 79-80 OPC's. I loved looking at the pictures of the team logos on the cards and seeing cards of Winnipeg Jets. Come to think of it, I was also, at the time, enamoured by cards that had captions on the front that said "Traded to ..." or "Now with...".
I was one of the lucky ones who always kept my cards in good shape. No elastics and no games or wheel spokes. I remember when card sleeves were first introduced (at Ab. D Cards in Winnipeg) and I spent hours sleeving up all my cards. That must've been around 1983/84.
Still going strong 31 years later with no major breaks along the way.

I started buying gum cards in 1960 at the age of 4. By the time I was 10 in 1966, we had to have a Fresh Bobby Orr Topps Rookie in the spokes of our bikes, held with a clothespin, to make that Motor-bike Ratt-A-Tat-Tat noise.
If you never had a fresh Bobby Orr Rookie, Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk, Or Jean Beliveau in your spokes each week, you just weren't cool.

I don't remember the exact moment, but I do recall some memories from my early days of collecting.
I know it started with baskeball cards. Basketball was my favorite sport growing up, mostly because the Detroit Pistons were awesome in the late 80's and early 90's and won back-to-back NBA championships. My older brothers had a few cards laying around when I was growing up like every kid does, but none of them seriously collected. I probably started collecting because my best friend in grade school collected Michael Jordan cards and had a binder full of them. I thought that was cool and wanted to collect my own. I was a Joe Dumars fan. A few other friends in grade school collected basketball cards, and I can remember trading at lunch and recess.
From there my collecting branched out depending mostly on what I could find in my little hometown. I distinctly remember riding around on my bike to collect pop cans to return for the deposit so I could buy packs of 1990 Pro Set hockey from Richard's Pharmacy (local drug store) and packs of 1991 Fleer baseball Rebo's Hardware (local hardware). We did not have a LCS in my hometown, but my mom was also supportive of my collecting growing up. She would always buy me and my brother full boxes from Pace (now Sam's Club) about once per month when she would go shopping. We also always got boxes of cards for Xmas and Easter. My mom also bought me my first hockey single. An autographed OPC Yzerman rookie. It was really cool at the time, and I still have the card.

I loved up against the wall. I was good at it too - I killed a lot of good late 80s/early 90s cards doing that. LOL
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

My friend collected cards and I saw him having 93-94 Scores and I thought that what the heck, let's try one. That "one" took five years until I didn't have money anymore to collect, during the next ten years I bought maybe four packs of cards. Then I decided to find out something about some card and I ran into this Finnish forum. Thought that I might begin to collect again I chose Cody McLeod and now almost two years later I'm still hunting for those missing ones.
