Why do you collect?
Thought this would be an interesting thread. Do you collect because you are a huge sports fan? Do you just collect a specific player? Do you collect for the fun and enjoyment of it or for potential monetary value down the road? What, to you, is the most rewarding aspect of sports card collecting?

I might be different than the majority of people on here but my favorite player in hockey, the one I love collecting stuff from, has never played for my team, heck has barely even played games on the west coast of the country. With him being an enforcer I'm doing it more for fun as the most part the resale value isn't really there unless you hit the right other collectors

well at first I forced myself to collect.. but then I pulled my first Peter Mueller card and fell inlove with the Hobby... It makes me happy.. I like it... I love it. So now I collect foor the passion, The love, and for a specfic player/team. This hobby makes me whole... It completes me. Everytime I make a new trade, Open a bubble mailer to find cards, open a box. It just gives me a good feeling inside. Just like when I go out there and play hockey.

I collect because I enjoy "The Art Of The Deal". I absolutely love selling things, anything, does not matter.
Everything in this World is a commodity, and somewhere there is a buyer. Cards are simply easier to store than Boats, Cars & Dilithium Crystals, so why not.......Besides, they are like hot women, every 3rd or 4th one just catches your eye and you've got to have it.

To me, it's for a few reasons.
I'm more of a pack/box buyer than a trader because I enjoy the thrill of not knowing what I'll get and I keep hoping to score a big hit even if most of the time I end up getting nothing all that great. To date, I have not had a single big hit (a 1/1 or a card that is highly sought after), but I keep hoping for it. The best I ever manage is to pull a card that's numbered to 25. Got several of those now, but I seem blocked at that number.
I also want to give my collection to my kids at some point in the future. In essence, I am trying to build a "treasure" for them, something that's both amazing and perhaps even valuable, something that they'll always go back to look at. I hope. Works for me anyways! lol

Love the challanges bound by your own rules and limits. I love trading and how much it helps the set builders. As for Bobby Ryan, he was (and is) an underdog in my book and I root for the underdogs because it feels so much better when you/they win.

Because it's fun. That will always be the number 1 reason. I collect all sorts of stuff.... Specific Players, Sets, Rookies, Autos. Mix things up a lot to keep my interest going (some of my long term projects are hard to add to).
When it stops being fun, I'll be out of it..... at least for a while, until I figure it'll be fun again.

I collect for fun also. I remember when i was a tiny toddler, I used to collect anything that I found interesting, including mail (empty envlopes and packages)...believe it or not lol
So now that I think about it, collecting has been pretty much been my entire life. I would collect toys, trinkets, etc.
I collect certain players simply because I thought and still think that it is more fun than to collect an entire team. If I did collect an entire team, there would be cards all over the place. 25 players? Too much hassle, and too much work to sort all of the cards.
And yes, I am a huge hockey fan. Iv been a hockey fan for a good 7-8 years now, and hockey has kept me going day in and day out. Just like collecting, hockey has been pretty much been my life. Its what I think about all day. Its a hobby that is extremely entertaining, as well as rewarding when you get the card that you've always wanted or you meet new people and new friends.
Usually, the bubble mailers in the mailbox at the end of the day is the highlight of the day. LOVE opening the mailbox to the yellow packages :)

Awesome.
I love the thrill of hitting something big and having a cool piece in my collection, even if it doesn't stay there forever. I also collect a lot of Yankees stuff, which is awesome to hold/have a part of history in the autograph of one of my favorite Yankees or a piece of Lou Gehrig's jersey. Sorry not hockey related, but don't hold on to a ton of the hockey I open.
