2008 Allen & Ginter - RIP CARD! - Why Rip?

I am in the middle of my box break and I got a Bedard Rip Card! It looks like it books for $120. My question is - why the heck would I rip it? What is so good that could be in it? Any ideas?

it depends some are autod i think...there is a light test you can do to see what card is underneath i think check for it on youtube

Could be a 1/1 Dick Perez Sketch card, a 1/1 wood wini, or a #/10 Red auto as well.

Would anyone really pay $120 for an Erik Bedard rip card??? I know people would trade for it though if it's unripped. If it were me, I'd take the chance, but there's always a chance you'll get a scrub extended Sp that's less valuable. Then again, you could get a real nice auto or 1/1.

Supposedly there was a rumor that you can hold the card up to the light and see what's in it. I wouldn't know since I've never been lucky enough to pull a rip card.

Typically people don't buy the rips for the player on the card, they buy it for the serial number that's on it. #/5's sell for rediculously more than /75 & /99, even though the odds of the major hits are roughly the same.

Since you valued yours at ~$120, I can make the assumption that it is a /5. If it were me, I'd rip it... But that is just because I would stay up at night thinking I just sold a 1/1 Dick Perez sketch thats worth hundreds if not thousands. Just like I could never sell an unopened box of cards (or give anyone lottery tickets for their birthday). The possibilities!

Forgot to respond to your second point Stewart, yes you can hold 2008 rip cards up to a light. You need a VERY powerful flashlight to do this and be in a completely dark room. Put the flash light behind the card and just look through it. This only works for 2008 and earlier, Topps got wise after.

I pulled a Corey Hart rip card /99 a few months ago from 2010 Ginter and I had the same dilemma as you, wasnt sure what to do, obviously I wanted to Rip it, but you should first do a little research. I went on ebay and saw that the last Corey Hart rip /99 sold for around $65, which is a decent chunk of change, than i checked out what the worst possible "hits" are from the rip cards, and they are the SP Minis. They were selling in the $30-$90 range for the most part depending on the player. based on my research i came to the conclusion that even if I get the worst thing possible from the rip card "the SP Mini" worst case scenario I get $30 for the mini. In my opinion selling a sealed Rip for $65 wasnt worth the risk, plus I knew as soon as I sold it, I would be dying inside not knowing what could have been. Long story short, I ended up ripping it and pulled a SP Mini of Matt Kemp, and sold it on ebay for about $45. Only about $20 less than if I had sold it sealed. I felt better knowing I ripped it and the small loss was worth knowing what was inside. Trust me, you sell that thing sealed your probably gonna think about it every day lol
