Subban Takes Lesson to Heart
http://www.montrealgazette.com/sport...720/story.html
Subban had a tough night Wednesday against Edmonton, maybe his most difficult in his 27 regular-season NHL games, burned on the Oilers' tying and winning goals.
But with a team-high 25:08 played, it was moderately surprising, at least, that he was scratched the following night. By midday yesterday, the 21-year-old still hadn't spoken to Martin about the decision, though he soon expected to.
"It doesn't really matter what I think or why I think I got scratched," Subban said. "At the end of the day, it's not my decision. All I can control is what I do on the ice.
"The coaching staff and organization come together and they put the lineup together every day. If I can't help the team win, I don't deserve to be in the lineup."
Martin said the move to sit Subban wasn't punishment, but rather "a process of apprenticeship."
The coach said that he has seven healthy defencemen and Thursday's game gave him an opportunity to view Weber, who played a strong match at his natural blue-line position.
Martin added that Subban's first 10 games of the season were his strongest, based on staff evaluation, but he wouldn't specify what he'd be asking the player to focus on for improvement.
"It's not really about me, it's the team," Subban said. "The team won (Thursday). That's what we should be talking about, but you guys aren't going to let me talk about that.
"To be honest, when I play well it seems to get blown up really big. When I don't play so well, I like to make sure it's the same way. Whether I take all the blame or not, I didn't play a good game (against Edmonton). You want to play well every game. The reality is you won't.
"Now I know the consequences. If you want to stay in the lineup, you have to make sure you're doing the job. I learn something new every day. The day I stop learning is the day that I don't get better."
Good to see that the kid gets it and understands why he sat out the last game. I still didn't like seeing it happen, but that's the way she goes.
