THN.com Blog: Base Iginla trade thoughts on sense, not sentiment
BY: Ryan Dixon
The arc of Jarome Iginla’s career represents an absolutely striking symmetry.
Iginla is so ingrained as the face of the Flames that it’s almost easy to forget he was drafted by the Dallas Stars, 11th overall in 1995. He came to Calgary about six months later when the Flames parted with a prominent piece of their team in Joe Nieuwendyk – who was holding out for a new contract – in order to obtain a unique young talent.

Both teams have benefitted. Nieuwy went on to win another Cup and a Conn Smythe, now GM, Iginla has had a good career, although sans cup in Cowtown.
Hard to say who won that sortie, tough to match a few great seasons and a Conn Smythe, considering when Nieuwy won it, he put the whole team onto his back in the last 2 Playoff Series.

It was a great deal for both teams. Iginla, in many people's opinion, is Mr. Flame. Face of the Franchise.... even more so than the guys that actually won something in 1989.
But for Dallas - No complaints at all. Any trade that leads to a Stanley Cup Victory is a good one. It doesn't matter how the prospects turned out.
Calgary is going to wake up one of these mornings, finally realize that they've got a horrible team... they need to dump the 'stars' while they still can.... and probably trust that job to someone other than Mr. Sutter. He's made a mess of a team that actually had potential 5 years ago.
