Gillick had signed c/o The Phillies last year quite a bit. He still works for them as a special adviser.
I think they got the voting right. The Yankees won 7 World Series with Steinbrenner as an owner, but he as the actual GM for none of them. He and Miller probably deserve to get in, and they will in time. Miller's vote total keeps getting higher, and I think they were just giving him the middle finger for his first year.
I thing Garvey falls into the "Hall of Very Good" Category. Which of his numbers really jump out at you? As for John, yes he has the surgery named after him. However, it's a crime if he gets in before Blyleven. John had 5 separate times when he led the league in any category. 3 Times he tied for the league in shutouts, Once he led the league in Wild Pitches and the other time it was hits allowed. He made 4 All-Star games, and appeared in the Cy Young Voting 4 times. Yes, he has 288 wins, but also has 230 losses. He's really the product of having played 26 years.

So is Nolan Ryan the product of a 27 season career? His win percentage is 53%, John's is 55%. I know the strike outs make a big difference and everyone always says, "But Ryan played for bad teams his whole career, that is why he has so many losses." Well guess what, Tommy John's teams made the playoffs the same amount of times as Ryan's teams did. John's career ERA of 3.34 isn't much higher than Ryan's 3.19 either.

That being said, I'm not taking Ryan out of the hall or putting John in, I'm just saying you can't really slam a guy for taking a long time get a lot of wins. Ryan is no doubt a Hall of Famer. I don't think Blyleven or John should be in. I don't think Andre Dawson should be in and I don't think Jim Rice should be in. The hall of fame is turning into what you referred to as "the hall of very good."

The only thing with Steinbrenner was he had the deep pockets to turn his team into the best

Welcome to the age of "Moneyball"

    I hate it too.

I'm by no means slamming him. I just don't think he is quite good enough to be in the Hall of Fame. Ryan did have 40 more wins and 3000 more strikeouts, too. The writers tend to vote for guys based on how they did against there contemporaries. Ryan was in the Top 10 in Cy Young Voting 8 times, led the league in ERA twice and WHIP twice and is the all-time leader in a sexy stat like strikeouts. As for the arguement over who had pitched on the better team, The sabermetrics guys came up with the WAR Stat to counteract that. John's WAR(Wins above replacement) was 54 for his career, which is below Rick Reuschel. Nolan Ryan was at 86, which is 16th all-time, right between Steve Carlton and Bob Gibson. John can't compete with that.
Blyleven, by the way, is 11th all time, between Randy Johnson and Christy Mathewson.
So is Nolan Ryan the product of a 27 season career? His win percentage is 53%, John's is 55%. I know the strike outs make a big difference and everyone always says, "But Ryan played for bad teams his whole career, that is why he has so many losses." I say Gillick deserves it. So did Steinbrenner and Miller.

Gillick built the Jays into back to back champs
Gillick was GM the last time the Orioles made the playoffs
Gillick was GM and able to turn the 2001 Mariners into 116 wins
Gillick was GM of the 2008 Phillies that won the World Series.
