Panini Certified consists of an in-depth base set with 150 veterans, 20 retired players (Immortals), 100 rookies (New Generation) and 35 rookie jerseys (Freshman Fabrics). The regular cards feature the player on a thin, foil type card stock. The player's name and team can be found at the bottom and the card logo is at the top.
There are parallels for the base set called Mirror cards. They can be found in five levels and serial numbered as high as 250 and as low as 1. Each corresponds to a specific color to denote which Mirror series it is. Certified also has hot boxes in which every card in the box is numbered. While Mirror cards can be found in a hot box, they are predominately filled another parallel called Platinum. These also have the same color code, but cards are numbered between 999 for the high and 1 for the low.
Consumers will find four autographs or memorabilia cards in each box on average. The big draw with the rookie class is the Freshamn Fabric series. As mentioned, these highlight 35 of the bigger named rookies this season. Each card will consist of two memorabilia swatches on the front. Parallels run in conjunction with the base cards and some versions will yield four memorabilia pieces along with an autograph. The other memorabilia series that attracts collectors is the Fabric Of The Game set. There are a few versions such as NFL and Team Die-Cuts as well as Jersey Number Signatures.
Certified continues to be one of the staple products in the Panini family. The base set is not a set collector's ideal release, but it is great for someone who enjoy a challenge. While not a daunting task, it is a difficult one considering you only get around one-third of the veterans, two of a mix between the retired players and rookies. And then there are the rookie jerseys that usually only run one per box. The cards themselves have a nice layout. The player is featured predominantly on the card in full color. The foil board offers a nice sheen and attracts the eye. For those looking for a bang for the buck, it's hard to beat a 10-pack product that has 4 "hits" and at least a bonus in virtually every pack. Not to mention that there is a hot box possibility in each 8-box mini case (3 per master case). Each pack offers a little bit of excitement unto itself and you don't get bored because of the small number of packs. There's no doubting why Certified is considered one of Panini's best releases year after year.
Once again, I'd like to thank our wonderful sponsors at Panini for giving us the opportunity to open and review this release. For more information on all their products, be sure to check them out at www.paniniamerica.net
