Very Interesting Ice Time Statistic
2010-2011 Season thus far.
Total Ice Time Per Game
*** Duncan Keith 27:11 leads the league with Dan Boyle 2nd at 27:00 ***
*** The first 55 Players in Total Ice Time are all Defensemen ***
*** The first forward to show up is Corey Perry at 22:15 ***
*** Only 3 forwards break the top 70 in total Ice Time ***
*** Those 3 forwards are Perry, Crosby, and Kopitar ***
*** 90 Defensemen are in the top 100 Total Ice Time ***
*** Only 10 Forwards are in the top 100 Total Ice Tme ***
Seems to me that if you want a cup, you play your forwards that give you the most value more often. That does not mean shortening your bench either. As Don Cherry said.... Iginla getting 14 minutes per game looks like a Bum. He told Sutter, I need 5 more minutes per game ice time. Now that he's getting it, his point production has increased by the same % as his ice time has increased.
Average coaches won't see this unless a player complains, and if he's a Rookie and complains he's banished to the Dog House. You've got a promising forward with good hands? Play him to death.....

Superstar Value for money???? - Randy Carlyle wins hands down. He's got his 3 top forwards in the top 10 forwards. No other team is close.
Now if the Ducks weren't such Bell Ends when it comes to discipline, they would probably enjoy a better standing than they have at this point. Unfortunately their PIM's per game has increased as a % percentage as their point shortfall, which only goes to prove that you cannot win a Stanley Cup from the Penalty Box.
Ovechkin??? Once lead the league in Forwards Ice Time at 22:59 in the 2008-09 Season and a very respectable 43 place in the Top 100, only 2 seasons ago.
Ovechkin's Ice Time has dropped by almost 1 1/2 minutes per game. That's 3 shifts per game !!!! Wow .... If you look at his Shots on Goal totals, they have dropped substantially, and as a percentage a larger drop than his ice time.
Boudreau as a Coach needs to play Ovechkin more, and encourage him to shoot like he used to, or this team will continue to fall. Ovechkin being shorted 3 shifts per game is a huge coaching error.
Yes I know, statistics are for idiots, but you can point to some coaching short comings by reviewing this little segment, as it reveals plenty.Last edited by centrehice; 12-19-2010 at 01:13 PM.

Tim,
Good points but I point this out:

I agree it better not to be in the penalty box but did not the Ducks win the Stanley Cup in 2007 with like the top pm's? I think they were but that is off the top of my head. So for them it might not be such a bad strategy as it worked for them before.
