    See BigScissors's Items on eBay

Im with Tutall but at the same time I agree with alot of other points made by others. 1 example is I pulled a 2004 Prime Sigs Platinum Parrallell 1/5 non auto of Jim Kelly anyone want to guess what I got for it on naxcom? If I had sold it locally I wouldnt have got 10% of what I sold it for on Naxcom. Naxcom/Ebay give you an oppurtunity to find that elusive card of a certain player you collect/ vice versa they give you an avenue to find the collector looking for said card.
The internet even though it has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 5 years still only represents maybe 5% of the Hobby. Just today i met a guy that said he wished he could find vintage stuff at decent prices, he said he was accustomed to paying 120% of Beckett for nice specimens of pre75 cards. I told him I regularly sold cards at 50% book and would be glad to go over the current inventory with him. He was escatic, he couldnt beleive I would offer to sell him cards at 50% Beckett. It really brought home the idea that finding sites like this have really opened up my collecting possibilities, and others arent so fortunate.
Today my step mom did a yard sale, I sorted cards by team and through 25 cards into each team bag and sold them for $2 each. I was amazed in 3 hours when I was sold out of 100 bags. $200 for 2500 commons, makes me think i should do this monthly. I buy 3200 count boxes of commons for $6 all day long, me and my daughter spend a few hours sorting and voila. Im going back tomorrow but more prepared with 500 team Bags hoping for similar luck. I also got phone numbers of 6 people intrested in buying some stuff I have at the house. I only took commons to the sale thinking kids would be the only intrested parties. Whoa was I wrong, I also blew out my McFarlane collection, selling 22 Figures at $10 each when i have offered them here and on spawn.com for anywhere from $5 to $10 with no luck. I was thinking maybe now is the time to get back into the swap Meet circuit. Im pretty excited by today, getting rid of junk and making decent money doing it.
My point is the net is not affecting the Hobby as much as some of us think.

Well if that was the case in your scenerio. Then Beckett would be WAY OFF TOO...because they only have a # of set stores that they take feedback from. Card shops that have been around for years. So that doesn't give you exact pricing...but like I said...eBay is a monster to sell cards that are rare or highly in demand. It's easier for the seller and buyer. Just think about the time it would take you to sell a Chan Ho Park or Hideo Nomo Auto in Albany, New York? Park and Nomo autos do demand big money. But you'll have to wait months and months. And may not get near the prices eBay is coughing up do to the buyers that are in Los Angeles, South Korea, Texas, and Japan...where most of these guys have fans in.

Of course people do shows and have card shops. But can you tell me how many card shops have you seen go down in ashes in the last 10 years in your area? I've seen quite a few...just because they keep TRYING to sell everthing under Beckett's price Guide. The only card shops and dealers that stay alive are people who...A) Give you a good discount because your a repeat buyer or want your repeat business B) Have well known connections to players, card companies, or big money spenders or C) Sell on eBay some of their stuff that they can't sell like a Miami Dealer trying to sell a Matt Hasselbeck Auto. Where do you think it's quicker and where he would make more money? At a show or his shop or eBay.

Now certainly...I agree that Beckett doesn't go by what eBay does alone...but then again...I don't go by Beckett 100% and I'm pretty sure there's quite a few people who do the same.

say there are 5 BIG sportscard sites with 8000 registered members on each... that is a high nuber because there are only 3 i can think of that actually have that many members.. that is 40,000 people on trading sites... now you have to take into account the double members who might be a member of both, the non active members who posted about one card they had or something and left, banned user account etc.... then you add in Ebay.. maybe another 10,000 card collectors... are you telling me there are only 50,000 people that collect cards? a lot of people still go to the c ard shop and pay 75-80% BV.. i see it at my shop all the time... that is where beckett gets their value... lets face it... how many times have you gone to a card show and seen cards marked at WAY above Ebay Prices? all the time... if they could sell them for that much on ebay they would probably save themself the time and money for a table and put them on there... but there are collectors who A. dont have access to the internet, or B. Dont want to take the time to look on there and enjoy going to the hobby shop all the time.. i know for me personally when i go to the hobby store i willl spend quite a bit on singles i need for my magglio collection because i know what i am getting and i am buying from a local store keeping them in business... I think beckett goes by the average price of card shops/shows... obviously if they went by ebay prices the marks would be much lower but that is not all they take into account

thats what they make money on though and obviously we pay it so they make money... it would be like making a t-shirt that mde you 3 dollars each shirt or making a long sleeve dress shirt that made you 20 bucks a pop... which would you make more of?

Don't get me wrong, I realize that people like them, and I certainly don't fault the manufacturers from making them. I do, however, fault the manufacturers for making them the only products worth buying.

It just seems to me that for the hobby to grow, there have to be interesting and affordable products to get people to try it out. No one thinks, "I think I'll start a new baseball card collection, I'll buy a tin of 4 cards for $120...."

I only read the first page of this thread but I feel the grading companies are what ruined/is ruining the card industry. Why do we need cards to be graded? Top loaders do a fine enopugh job of protecting the card already. They don`t need to be hermetically sealed imo. Why would my Mickey Mantle rookie card in NRMT condition be worth less than a graded one( ex: PSA 4 EX)? I understand that a card that is graded and sealed should be worth something, but they`re the same card. I don`t know? The industry is taking a wrong turn. That is fact.

grading has made the grading people rich. b/c good cards ungraded arent worth ™™™™ now. if the grading people were completely honest and didnt do favors for people by grading trimmed cards and what not then i wouldnt be concerned about it. beckett is just a reference. i wouldnt blame them so much. unless they happen to be the same people as the ones who started the grading trend.

In my opinion, 2 things ruined the hobby- game used cards and ebay. Dont get me wrong, I use ebay as much as the next guy, but book values are a joke now, since all everyone cares about is "what can i sell it for on ebay." as far as game used goes- talk about a good idea gone bad. It used to be cool to pull a jersey card because A. they werent so damn common, and B. they were usually decent players. But now, all people seem to talk about is game used this and game used that- and 90% of em suck now- I mean, Arod game used for 10 bucks? Come on- this guy is the hottest player in the hobby (again- my opinion) and his cards aint worth anything. And the companies now are charging 100 bucks or more a box to guarantee 2 6 dollar jersies...come on... thats why i dont bust much wax any more...100 bucks is a lot to spend on 15 dollars worth of cards...ok, theres my take on it- feel free to agree or argue with me, i love debates

ebay connects people who arent in the hobby to find buyers for their stuff which they dont necessarily care if they get top dollar or not. which for the buyers/you guys should be happy about that. but it also allows the market to get flooded with some of the stuff that there is more product than buyers which is supply and demand. this is a downfall when most of the money changes hands through ebay.

Here' s what I think after reading ALL the posts and in my opinion.
    Ebay is a GOOD thing....
    Grading could go either way....
    Beckett is just a guide....
The card companys make way too many cards, ex: 2004 Leaf Certified Materials, Mirror red, Mirror Blue, Mirror White, Mirror Gold. These are the prime example. You have a base card and then several variations. All the same card just a #to type, and a different color. Then they add the autos, the game used, and the other BS. So here you have a million different combinations of the exact same FU%#en player. And it doesnt matter to the company. They still charge us first born for a box. Ive' spent over $3000 in the past 3 months on cards and I havent pulled anything but a Mark Tiexira 1/1 platinum parallel (by the way there is 25 different combinations of this card), 1 NICE patch card, and a bunch of stuff I couldnt sell for $500. BV is over $6000. So it goes to show you that if you're in this to make $$$. YOU PROBABLY WONT!!!! If you're in this because you like cards, sports, etc. Then have fun!!! Just make sure your bills are paid and your families are fed. And svae a few of these really nice cards for your children, or thier children. Thats what is really valuble. Keep on collecting!!!

I didn't read through everyones posts, but I look at it as Beckett more or less grew the hobby. Yes, it is horribly out of touch but everyone adjusts there pricing from their top dollar. eBay is atcually a better price guide, in a sense, but not handed to you in a bound magazine.

As far as GU'd stuff, I see lots of people bashing it, but the idea is brillliant in my eyes. It is a bit played, but if you search for people looking for trades just on this site alone, I would guess 75%-85% are looking for GU'd and Autos.

I do agree that sometimes there is way too much product, especially since It takes me 20 minutes to look up an Upper Deck card from 2003. Sometimes you can't even find which set it's from. Although, that just lets the collector have more choices as to what he wants to collect. It's just the evolution of the hobby and I think it's good. I hear dealers that say they quit or can't make money. They just need to evolve with the hobby.

    just my two cents.
