Local card shop owner passed away
The owner of the card shop in town passed away the other day.
He was a great guy, a war hero who opened the store with his wife. They sold candy, bought and sold used books, and then started selling cards. It was sort of a hobby-type job for them after they retired. His wife passed away around '01, she was the sweetest lady in the world. I remember when me and my friends were younger we would spread all our books of cards and stuff in the store to trade with each other and buy packs, they didnt mind, they were happy we were having fun. Always gave you a pack of cards for getting straight A's on your report card, and would give you a penny-sleeve and toploader if you pulled a good card.
I continued to go in there from time to time even though I havent bought a lot of cards in the past few years just to catch up and buy a few packs. He was never in it for the money, i remember him saying something like "well, I make enough to pay the rent and the electricity, I just enjoy being here". Sometimes if I bought a box I'd open it in there because he was always interested in why I got, hoping I'd get something good. Sometimes if I didnt, he'd even throw in a few packs. Really cool guy, and had a lot of good stories.
It's hard to find people like this in the hobby (especially card shop owners) who just have fun with it, instead of being too worried about "values" and making money.
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to post how cool of a guy he (and his wife) was and he will be missed by many around here.

Awesome story. I like hearing stories like this. Rminds you theres still some people in it for the love of the hobby and not the money. Remember before gameused and pack pulled autos when it was awesome to pull a rated rookie out of a pack of donruss, now people are like, it has no patch, no auto, why have it? What happened to collecting?
