Andy Moog Recovering After Heart Attack
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/healt...836/story.html
Moog, 50, who won three Stanley Cup rings in Edmonton, suffered a heart attack while doing cardio work. He managed to make his way home, had his daughter take him to hospital and needed a stent inserted. He’s on the road to recovery but it was the scare of his life.
“I was just cruising along (at the gym) ... I’d been doing the cardio for about two minutes, and all of a sudden, the pain came in waves. I got this crushing pain. I started sweating like I had run a marathon,” said Moog. “Fortunately, a cardiologist I know was on call at the hospital that day.”
Moog said that one of his arteries was 100 per cent clogged, the one that supplies the blood to 30 per cent of his body. His weight had fluctuated as a longtime coach/goalie instructor with the Stars before his contract wasn’t renewed last May, but it wasn’t like he had ballooned. Looking back, he says there were some signs but it wasn’t like he was out of breath doing simple chores.
“There was no family history, no high blood pressure, my cholesterol wasn’t too high,” said Moog, who was a fuzzy-cheeked 21-year-old in 1981 when Sather gave him the assignment of his young life, trying to beat the Canadiens, and he forged his reputation with a terrific performance. He won his three Cups as an Oiler, including playing in the nets for their first win in ‘84 after Grant Fuhr was hurt late in the finals against the Islanders. He moved to Boston and was in two more Cup finals against the Oilers, then got into coaching.
“I had a pretty good day (Monday). I’ve started rehab, doing a little walking on the treadmill, three times a week at a cardiac facility. They’ve got me hooked up to all these monitors so I don’t get into any trouble,” said Moog. “They want me to lose about 10 pounds, change my diet, exercise.”
I wish him well with his recovery. When I was growing up, Moog spent his summers in a condo complex that was right around the corner from my house in tiny little Okanagan Falls, BC. All of us kids would gather up our cards and go knock on his door. He was a great guy and signed everything for everybody. Even though he was a Bruin at the time, I thought that was still pretty cool of him. When he became a Canadien later in his career, that was really cool of him.

Very scary news, but I'm glad to hear that Moog is doing well. I grew up being a fan as he was part of the Oilers dynasty. Let's hope for a speedy recovery!
