How many have attempted/completed #'d sets?
Just wondering if anyone has attempted or completed numbered sets for a certain player? I'm thinking of trying to get every numbered version of a certain card/player and curious of others success or failures.
Thinking something like a signature or jersey card #'d 100 or less.

That's what we in the biz refer to a "pulling a Quincy" - so named after the collector who popularized the concept of getting all 5 cards of a player in a subset #'d /5.
I haven't completed the feat myself but for a couple different ones I'm at 3/5 and 6/10. :)
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Ah, is this "Quincy" still in the biz? I am going to start small ($$$ wise) and work my way up.
What cards are you trying to complete for those sets?

I've herd of it happening a couple of times. Mostly with low print run stuff, like /5 and /10.
I once tried to collect /50 got as high as 6 without really trying and then nothing until someone wanted 15$ for theirs. The big problems are as follows:
If you aren't collecting a brand new release, its hard to find fresh supply. Just try thinking about all the cards you see from even 2 years ago. The most popular stuff is 10-11. Its takes a long time to find your full print run. One guy who did his /5 took about 7 years.
For all releases, box price tends to go up as supply dwindles. Even now there are unopened *cases* of 05-06 the cup. Montreal Centennial still has retail out there at 100$+ a shot and its not getting any cheaper. My favorite set is 04-05 CAnadian exclusives /50. I can't buy a hobby box for less than 100$ or a retail for less than 70$. With only a chance to hit an exclusive /50, that I may not even need , is it really worth dropping 100$ on a box?
Set collectors and player collectors are the death knell. If you collect a popular player, everybody and their brother want *one* of those copies in their PC to claim that they have one of every card. And if you have to fight set collectors, sometimes they can get crazy. Are you willing to pay at least as much as that set collector who just needs that last card for each and every copy that you pick up? Because they'lol fight you on every auction until they get one and keep upping their bid as the next one shows up.

Let's say you manage to collect about 90% of your cards. You've been visiting all the trade sites, eBay and posting your messages everywhere so everyone knows that you want that card. Guess what? The resident flipper just pulled a copy. You know, the guy who breaks 1 case and sells everything they pull to make a profit. Whose prices are 5$ when no one wants it and x20 when you need it. Its no Gretzky auto, but if you have 49 copies of the card and they have 1, guess who will only sell for 100+$
Don't buy to invest. Ever try to unload 100 copies of the same thing all at once? You can bet that you won't recoup your losses. If you collect the entire run of someone, do it for keeps and with the intention that when you resell, you may not even get 1/3 of what you paid for them unless you're willing to release 1 every 4 months or so, and even then, 1/3 is optimistic.
If you go for this collecting Holy grail, all the power to you. Just be aware what you are getting into. If you really want to make a run at it, pick something small small small like 10 or less. Pick something of a midling player that you like and identify (Drudry ain't a poor choice from your sig). Pick something HEAVILY broken if you want the whole run. Be prepared to over pay. Keep your eyes open, but your mouth shut unless you don't mind paying triple for that 10th card or abandoning the project altogether when you meet someone who refuses to be reasonable.

.................................................. .................................................. .....
I completed the 99-00 SP Authentic Set. Every RC, every insert, every auto. Cost thousands of dollars to do and I never recouped even 1/6 th of the cost back.
It has been completely disassembled, and only 1 Auto left and a dozen or so inserts. I still have the perfectly, painstakingly, hand-collated 1-90 Base.
Never again would I attempt such foolishness. The cost and time are too great and the reward, negligible.

Great input, I figured there would be people that would try and pray on someone trying to complete a collection. I've collected drury since years ago and now that i'm getting back into this I figured why not start back up. His stuff isn't stupidly priced so I can get nice cards for very little. Picked up 1 card today so far on the bay.
I won't go to the ends of the earth to complete a set but will do my best within reason.

I've had 3/5 in the past (ended up moving one of them) 5 or 6 out of 50, I think 4 of 24 (just thinking of a few cards I know I had several dups on).
There's too much compition. Bill Ranford isn't exactly a widely collected player, but the half dozen or so that do collect him.... they make it difficult to do something like this. For some of the true hobby stars of today, I would suspect something like this is almost impossible.

I also know of at least two people who have completed a full nameplate from a SPGU By The Letters (same year) and a couple others who are only one away.

It sounds like a funny idea, but why exactly do you want to do it?
