I wish I had deep pockets for cards but given how expensive the cost of living these days is, I'm happy and satisfied to be able to spend $50-$75 a month.

neither do i have too much money to spend on cards, and there is always the risk looming of overspending your budget, so i think it's really a quite insightful and reasonable standpoint of you towards collecting.

at the moment i can think of only 3 cards that i paid more than 50$ (but less than 100 ) for:

    Malkin SPA FWA /999
    Toews SPA FWA /999
    and
    Patrick Kane SPA FWA /999

(probably i bought some others for +50 but don't want to talk about it at the moment ;-) )

these are / were really my favorite players at the time, and i like the iconic design of the 06/07 and 07/08 SPA Rookies, so would buy them anytime again and they would be also on my 1000 $ spending llist. also the following would be strong buys on my list:
    Johan Franzen FWA
    Bobby Ryan FWA
    Drew Doughty FWA

can't think of any other "must-have" cards at the moment (there are probably some, but have "spent already enough with these 6 ;-) ) ,
can't see myself spending 300 $ on a Stamkos FWA or 550 on a Crosby FWA at all.
so would probably take the remaining 650 $ to the bank or do something good with it

I'd like to say that I'd go out and get some Gretzky's or Crosby's, I think I'd just stick to my PC players. Here's what I'd do

    05-06 Ice RC /99 - Corey Perry - $302
    05-06 Cup RC /199 - Corey Perry - $220
    05-06 Victory RC Black /5 - Corey Perry - $148
    05-06 MVP RC /25 - Corey Perry - $74
    10-11 SPGU By the Letter /5 - Brad Boyes - $80
08-09 Cup RC /99 - Luke Schenn - $180 (Not officially PC, but my fave current Leaf)

I think with those cards, I'd be truly proud of my PCs. Although right now, I'm quite happy as it is.

probably would get 3 of the four Carey price Rookie I am missing. The fourth one being the cup but I have the gold 19/31 so less incline to buy a 99 rc but some do sell under 1000$ now.

I think I pass on cards and go with some game used equipment. As the something I like to branch into more.
