KITCHENER—Steve Spott knew the young Swede was something special the first time he saw him play.

It was the world under-18 hockey championship and Spott, head coach and general manager of the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers, was serving as an assistant with Canada. He watched as his defence struggled to deal with this kid “who seemed to be parked at the net front on every Swedish power play.
