So just include a stamped envelope inside of a bigger envelope? I'm assuming that's how to do it, right?

For cards I usually address one envelope to the player. Then inside of that I put my cards, a letter of request, and a SASE the same size, but folded in half so that it fits into the other envelope.

I send football cards year round. They have OTAs so the players are in and out all the time.

Awesome, thanks! Any tips on who generous signers are? I'm a fan of any HOFers, 49ers, Bengals and San Francisco Giants.

I would be careful sending to current nfl players right now at least until football's labor issues are resolved. I would stick to retired players for now. Dan Fouts is a real good ttm signer and he can reached c/o the pro football hof.
