Chuck Bednarik
Just a little rant. I wanted to post this in the TTM manager but didnt want to spam it up. I dont want to tell you guys what to do and what not to do. But seriously, some of you are getting greedy with people like Chuck Bednarik. I'm thinking of sending out a photo or something to get signed to my dad. I'm afraid of getting it sent back or not at all, because people keep sending him 3 or 4 8x10s or cards at a time, which apperantly have been rapidly ending up on ebay. I'm hoping the true collectors and fans will back me up on this one.
Like someone said in a previous thread, this guy is signing out of the goodness of his heart. So to you people, and you know who you are. Stop taking advantage of good people, because you are ruining it for the true fans,.

Chill, chuck is a class act and a great signer, both in person and TTM (I have heard if you really want to get him IP, go to a University of Pennsylvania football game and ask around- that he's there and willing to talk football with anyone- I haven't done it myself but have a reliable source on that). I'm sure you'll get your auto.
Still, the way guys take advantage of greats TTM like Doerr and Bednarik is really abhorrent. I don't think anyone on these forums would TTM and ebay, but I guess I am naive and you never know.

Yea, I'm not trying to freak out or anything. It's just annoying seeing people get greedy with signers like him, as well putting them on ebay. Idk guess it's just the way things are.

You pretty much summed it up there by saying its just the way things are. As long as people can make money off of sigs, this sort of thing will always take place. As for guys like Bednarik and Doerr, they have been so great for so many years I doubt they are going to stop now. I know for a fact Bednarik still does public signings so he is making a couple bucks. It is only a handful of people abusing these players and the true fan outweighs the phony 100 fold. And most athletes/celebs know that fact. And yes he is a great guy. My Dad goes to the same barber as him and runs into him occasionally.

I usually send to the likes of Bednarik and Doerr about once a year. I do not sell them on ebay though.

I see this topic boiling two into two issues- what is enough enough? and selling ttms on ebay.
"When is enough enough?" is something thats been debated on here several times. I collect baseball HOF autos. I have sent almost every member of the Hall multiple times. I have sent ROMLB, ROA/NLB, HOF postcards, 8x10s, index cards, base cards, and the occasional oddball figure.
My thoughts are not to send more than 2 items per request- 99% of the time I only send 1. I also always try my best to meet the standard fees an athlete may have. I figure if I'm giving them a few dollars for an auto its just like going to McDonalds- its a business transaction. If I get to the back of the line and send again with the appropriate fee I see no issue with it. A great example is Rollie Fingers. He has a set $10 fee. If I send him $10 and a base card every week is that really wrong? He sets his fee and I meet it.
As for free signers I usually try and always send some cash with my requests. I have sent Bobby Doerr money a ton of times usually $5 for a base card or postcard, $10 for an 8x10 or ball, and when I just ttmed a jersey I picked up from the Hall of Fame I sent him $25. With this I'm really on the fence if its the 'right thing' or not. With a guy like Rollie Fingers I think as long as you send the $10 you should be free game to send as often as youd like. With a guy like Doerr...I don't know. I do send money to offset some of my frequency but is that even the point? He signs out of the goodness of his heart and isn't interested in the money. I'm really not sure about this and if my $ brings a balance at all.
As for the ebay thing....
Unless I REALLY needed the cash I don't think I could part with any of my ttm stuff. Again though I believe it comes down to the fee arrangement. Selling a Bednarik or Doerr when they signed for free just sits wrong with me unless of course there is a major emergency and need for cash. I'll remember for a long time how when Robin Roberts passed away people were selling his free ttm index/stat signed card for $20. Mr. Roberts was very giving with those and they were/are awesome. To cash in on his death with his generosity just is the lowest of low.

I don't think (and I hope) that the people who do take advantage of some of these guys aren't on this site. I've sent to Chuck a few times, initially a custom, then another custom, then two 8x10's I wanted signed, and then I wanted to do a questionnaire and my brother wanted some photos, so I made sure to include $15 and a longer letter to show my gratitude. I never have and never will sell any of my stuff obtained TTM on eBay. The true collectors like us just need to make sure we express our thanks when sending..
