Best 2 Yankee cards I got in years......
I recently sold to a dealer friend all my non-New York cards old cards, 1979 and before, going back to the late 1940s. I decided to make my collection a true New York collection (New York teams in all sports). I used the money to buy a couple of great cards for my collection, cards i couldnt afford without making this sale, and here is how and why i decided on the cards i got:
I decided i want 2 cards with the money I got from selling all my 1948 thru 1979 non-New York cards.I decided I wanted a Ruth and a Gehrig. I set up criteria for the new cards:
1- obviously, total has to be around what i got for my cards as i didint want this to cost me any money, not an easy thing to do when you want two great cards of Ruth and Gehrig, and its not like i got a fortune.
2- must be a Ruth and a Gehrig, no other players, for as much as i love The Mick and Joe D, to me Ruth and Gehrig are the two main players in Yankee history, and you can never have too many original real cards of them.
3- must be 2 cards from sets that i do not have ANY cards from now, so i will get 2 more new "types" of cards in my Yankee collection
4- must be cards that look better than what they grade, i will NOT take really bad-looking cards on this buy
5- must be graded in slabs to verify authenticity on items this expensive, i will remove them later, for as you guys know, i buy all my old expensive cards graded to verify authenticity. Too many fakes and reprints out there to chance getting one. I know they can even screw around with the slabbed cards, but the chances of that are much slimmer than with an un-graded card.
6- dealer must be willing to send needing my signature, i will not do any deal this large without it needing my signature. Delivery confirmation without a signature is a joke. This is an easy criteria as any dealer who would send out expensive cards without wanting a signature is a fool or a scammer.
Well, i looked all over the internet, at Ebay and forums and dealers websites, and i found the following two cards that met all my criteria and together came to almost the exact of money i had gotten in my sale:
1951 Topps Connie Mack All Star Lou Gehrig. A totally different, really neat card. Missing the upper backing like most of the ones are. It grades a "1" due to the missing backing, but the rest of the card is in really nice shape. There were a couple of cheaper ones around, but they were not in as good shape as this one, plus this one was graded and the others were not. This will be a really good new "type" for my collection. I have dealt with this dealer before.
1933 Sports King Babe Ruth - i have wanted this card for a long long time, could never afford one, and its hard to find a nice looking one in lessor condition. Well i did. It was actually cheaper too than another that graded the same but didnt look half as nice as the one i found. Its a PSA-1, but a really nice one. I have dealt with this dealer before too. A very good looking example of this great Ruth card.
So here they are:
