Vintage cutoff....

So when does a baseball card exactly "become" vintage?

There is nothing set in stone when declaring something vintage. Everyone has their own opinion on what they consider vintage. Some say only pre-war cards are vintage. Others will go as far as saying anything up to 1979. It is just a matter of who you are talking to. I think it is a term that gets over used a lot especially when you talk about cards from the 80's or 90's.

In the SMR, they break down each sport by "Vintage" and "Modern" IIRC, the cutoff is at 1977. Anything after 1977 is considered modern, and anything prior is considered vintage. I don't know if next year that will bump up 1 year or not... I don't know if I have an old smr to look at and see.

If you go by the kids on this and other sites, they claim vintage is 1995! Lol.

I've been collecting Hockey for 42 years or more. Vintage to me is anything from 1900 to 1960 at the maximum.

It's kinda like cars. Has to be at least 20 years old to be even considered Vintage.

In Hockey Cards I have said that anything older then 1989-90 sets are vintage but that is not exactly true, but works well as the market exploded in the 1990-91 and newer sets and have not been the same since.

Along those same lines, I have seen advertisements for "Vintage Card Shows" that allow the sale and trading of cards from 1976 and older.

I think for cars if you want a vintage license plate the car has to be at least 25 years old. I think anything 20-25 years old or more should be considered vintage.

I collect vintage baseball cards and I say I only want pre-1970. Really, anything after that isnt worth much anyway.

yeah i personally consider vintage 25 years or older, but i consider myself an early vintage collector, which would be 1880-1950 i consider the 1965-1980 cards modern vintage, but that is just my way of looking at it.
