Another quick note. When dealing with glass, unless you're putting it in a basement or something, get tinted or coated glass that will protect against UV rays which cause cards to fade. If they're in a spot with no direct sunlight, not a huge issue though.

It really depends on how much money you want to put into the display. I have two shelves on a bookcase where I display my cards on stands. The stands cost something like $1.50 each.
I also have two wall boxes I got from Penzoni.com (http://www.pennzonidisplay.com/). They offer enough room for graded cards and are deep enough for thick one-touches. You can get these with the UV Protect glass if you are displaying autographs. I didn't, though. Instead I bought the one-touches from Pro Mould that have the UV Protect.

Toploaders and teambags or one-touch holders for the high-end cards.

shadow boxes work (some have variable depths.

I made these with a router and old sticks. They are slotted to accept magnetic one touches or signle screw cases.
