BGS grading question - smudge on sticker auto

    Hello -

Was very pleased to pull a Russell Westbrook Topps Chrome RC Refractor Autograph this weekend. Very, very nice card and - seeing how i do not open much wax - one of my better pulls ever.

I think I am going to send it to BGS. The card is in great shape with one small exception - a very small and faint smudge on the sticker. As you can see below, the smudge is not very close to the autograph. The smudge is not a scratch or tear or anything, only ink. How will this affect the BGS grade? Will it affect the overall grade or the autograph grade? Would this smudge decrease the grade to the point that I shouldn't send it in?

Below is just a picture with an arrow pointing to the area. I will get a better picture this afternoon and post. I realize the smudge does not show up very well on this photo, but this at least gives a good idea of how dark the smudge is compared to the autograph itself. Any opinions would be very helpful.

It might affect the AUTO grade...
I'd be more worried about those vertical surface scratches below the 'rookie card/ball' logo and on the left side in general.

thanks for the feedback. forgot to point out that the scratches are on the case instead of the card. i did a double take as well wehn i saw the picture and then went back to check.

maybe you can very carefully remove the smudge with a q-tip & a very little bit of rubbing alcohol
ive never tried it before but im sure it would work, just make sure u dont touch the actual signature

Is that not frowned upon? While it may work I would be terrified to try it to be honest. Might take the slightly lower auto grade rather than a big time risk.

I read some stuff on the BGS site and the auto should still grade reasonably well. Not a 10, but it should be alright. A card howling evidence of tampering though could be downgraded in a big way I believe.

bump - really curious about the rubbing alcohol thing. i dont want to do anything too shady. has anyone ever actually done this? even if i do go this route, def will try it on a lower end card first.

any opinions on whether or not i should even send this card in are hugely aprpeciated.

I've never tried it before, but I am guessing that it would be detectable if one examined it very carefully, possibly with a magnifier which I assume these grading companies use when verifying an autograph. In that case, as it was said before it would probably downgrade the autograph a lot more than just the smudge would.

I wouldn't even go there with the rubbing alcohol...
Even if you test it on another card there is no guarantee it will react the same way.

Should you send it in for grading?

Sadly there is no way any of us could tell from a scan.
Card really has to be raw/in hand viewed with a naked light bulb and like DCool stated under some type of magnification.
