NHL Power Rankings - February 7th, 2011
This is my initial Power Rankings for the NHL since the launch of my site. This rankings are not only merely based upon a teams record, but their play on the ice. Are the rankings perfect? Of course not, but it should be a reflection of not only a teams overall play but also recent play being a small factor.
Some notables in this initial Ranking: Pittsburgh is #2 without Crosby and Malkin have won 8 of their last 10. New Jersey has found a pulse and is #22.

Hockey might be Canada's game but I see the bottom 3 are all Canadian teams and only 1 Canadian team in the top 12. I guess you don't have to put a winning team on the ice in order to sell out a stadium up here.

I actually didn't notice this until I was publishing this. However, Edmonton, even though they are last, might be in the best shape of the 3... they at least have youth that has the potential to get better

Dallas at 19 seems a little odd. Atlanta has tanked over the last month, but I'm still not sure I'd rank them below Columbus, New Jersey, Florida, or Buffalo.
No problems with your bottom three though. They look bang on (MAYBE the Leafs should be a spot ahead of the NYI.... but probably not).
Edmonton will be fine in another couple of years. I expect they come close to the playoffs next season, make the playoffs in 2012-2013, and are serious contenders as early as the 2013-14 season.

I agree with you, until I look a bit deeper at the numbers
- They only have scored 2 more goals than allowed
- Have given up 9 Shorties (Only behind C-Bus and Buffalo)
- They have a sub 80% PK unit (25th overall)
LA, 9th on the list
- +16 golas
- Only 3 Shorties surrendered
- 11th in PK
Now Atlanta has a -17 goal differential, they are better than Edmonton Killing penalties and they have been terrible lately...
This is the fun of this...

as a pittsburgh fan im very nervous we lost 3 centers now (sid, geno, letestu) cant score any goals and have a coach named baylsma i call him ballsma cause i hate him.
look for them to drop especially when playing 14 games in 28 days of feburary. philly is a better team than pitt now so id switch them (that kills me to say) ughFlickr: Hidden Content

I'm a big Sharks fan but no way should they be that high, especially when they are still trying to catch Dallas which is placed at 19 and just a point ahead of Phoenix at 17

now alot of this is statistically based... I don't have any method of taking players out into account (although, if Pittsburgh does go south, the ranking will go with it.)
As for the entire Pacific Division, I wish I would have been doing this from the beginning of the season as I think we would have seen a the transition over the weeks. Dallas got off to a good start and has leveled off (not played bad). But I have to look this to see where my flaw in the logic is.
Like I said, this is going to be a work in progress.
