    Analysis: Montaya to the Isles

On February 9th, the New York Islanders acquired Al Montaya from the Phoenix Coyotes for a 6th round draft pick. With all of the injuries in goal for the Islanders since trading Dwayne Roloson to Tampa Bay, Montaya becomes the de-facto #1 Goalie for the Islanders. This was a deal of necessity for the Islanders. For Phoenix, they gain a late pick for a player that was not going to be in the organization much longer.

Is today the new trade dealine?

Good deal, I guess. 6th round pick isn't much..... it's obvious that Alvro isn't panning out. One last kick at the can, so to speak?

Anyone know if he needs to clear waivers to be called up? You all have to admit it would be hallarious if someone (especially the Red Wings) plucked him on re-entry waivers. No?

That would be funny.. I'm SHOCKED that the Isles didn't take a flyer at Emery... he'd be their number 1 right now!

Yeah. That they didn't claim his was predictable though. Emery shopped himself around before signing with the Ducks (i.e. he would rather play for a bottom feeder in the NHL.... then go to the minors on a better team).

I've looked up Waiver rules, and as best as I can tell.... Montoya does need to clear. I can't see anyone picking him up though.

    He was assigned to Bridgeport!!

They are going to go with the career minor leaguers as oppose to calling him up.... yikes!

By definition though, isn't he a career minor leaguer? (Just one that was thought to have some skills 5 years ago).

Even Bridgeport needs goalies..... they've obviously run out of them too.

    Much

If he's just staying in Bridgeport, filling in for their depleted goalies..... no waivers involved.
